it is a poor medical term.
It actually is an opening through the ligament
sheath(I am guessing) and the underlying tissues
    protrode..... just like a hernia.
You can get it from typing or other repetitive tasks.

      ganglion

My mother and best friend have them too - both were typists. My mother's is big and painless. My best friend's were smaller but very painful and required surgery, and the surgery cut her nerves, and now she's disabled. Mine doesn't hurt and isn't very big, and I suspect I got it from a combiation of typing and punching!

I have a slight lump on my wrist from hitting the bag. It doesn't hurt that much, but has stopped me from doing bicep curls because I can feel the weight pressing on my wrist.

Its been like that for about two months now. I think I better go and see the doc about it.

Old fashioned remedy: put your hand on a table, and whack the ganglion from a great hight with the family bible (or other suitably large, hard cover book). The impact will shatter the calcium inside the lump, and it will be absorbed back into your body.

Yeah, I still have the lump - I'm too chicken to try the bible remedy. It's got to be better than surgery that leaves you disabled though!

Does wearing gloves protect the wrists? Or do you have to have wraps AND gloves?

Cakegirl....errr.....you try the Bible remedy first and then let me know if it works! Hehehe!

My mum has also got a ganglion in her wrist. I went to the hospital with her last week and she was told by the doc not to have an operation. An operation will just leave you with a scar, and the ganglion could come back. Then you'll have a lump and a scar. She was also told by the doc that some people wear one of those sports wrists bands to push the lump back down.

Another bit of advice (especially for males), is not to tell people you've got a dodgy wrist!

Lizard, I hurt my wrist hitting the bag, and I was wearing gloves at the time.

                  what kind of gloves?

If I use the mits I described, this happens to me too, but when I wear the MMAgloves it doesn't, even though I hit way harder with the MMA gloves
I have done my share of knucklepushups though, which strengthens your wrists

At the time, I was wearing those boxing mitts. Normally, I would wear my Harbinger MMA gloves for pad/bag work, but I didn't have them at the time, and just used the crap ones that were lying around in the gym.

My MMA gloves do have a tighter fit around the hand and wrist area, but I'm not sure if they would have prevented me hurting my wrist.

Only strong wrists and correct form would stop that (and I don't have either of them!

i never tape my wrists - it gives you a reliance on the support provided by the tape, you tend not to strengthen your wrists. This is why many boxers etc damage their wrists when not taped. Much like the reason many of them damage their fist bones when they have no gloves on.

Plus i dont punch in a boxing type of way - the alignment in my fist is better so there is less pressure on my wrists.

                      cheers

I can respect that point of view. Many weightlifters feel the same way about using belts (me included). However, when you go with the big weight, it's always good to take precausions.

well, this brown belt told me that his gloves(MMA gloves) also protect the wrist

it is the only way, by taping your wrists,
you reduce risk of damage. It is nearly impossible
to build up your ligaments and hit perfectly so
that there are no deflections. The hand and the wrist
are very fragile, just like the toes....
Lucky thing in a street fight, most of the times you
wear shoes so when you kick, it does not hurt at all.
I've got ganlions on my right foot too.

since i broke one of my knuckles on my right hand (the knuckle for the ring finger btw, it feel like jelly...) for punching someone on the head, about 5 cm above the nose. i never wear glove or any protection...so that the knuckles will get use to it.

I have seen a glove on the market that also wraps tightly around the wrist.

But why people use strikes that need this support I'll never know.
