Poopy I just started going to a judo club at my college that focuses at least half of the class time on newaza, so basically I am doing BJJ plus judo throws for $5 a month !!!!

Cakegirl you're going for a Shotokan Blackbelt eh? Make sure they don't charge you a $100 "BlackBelt Fee".

I used to think belts where very important, but that was before I discovered elastic waist pants . . .

I am going for my second dan in WTF TKD in two weeks, have previously got to blue belt in Goju karate and yellow belt in ITF TKD.

The Goju karate was a funny one - I turned up to train one night and was told that it was now ninja school (this was in the height of ninjamania in the 80's). The instructor told me I could trade in my gi and blue belt for some black pyjama's and a red sash. I left and didn't go back.

Purple belt - TKD (but that was years ago)

            Blue belt -BJJ

Just taking a two year test - Muay Thai ( MT doesn't technically have belt levels except that Ajarn Chai gives an instructor exam. Our school uses tests along the way to keep us on track for that test.)

            White 'belt' minus 1 - Kali/escrima

at Sunn martial arts in Cannington, I only joined a few weeks ago but Im really enjoying it. They teach Muay Thai, Wing Chun, and kali, there is also a Gracie barra BJJ club that trains there too, so we are able to do a lot of cross training.

A couple of years ago I did some BJJ, Kenpo Jui Jitsu, and Bando at Sozokan in Maddington, that was also a good club.

                  regards

                    Swagman,

                    Sounds like an interesting mix!

Where I train is mainly TKD, but we also cross-train in boxing and BJJ.

All the really interesting clubs seem to be either south of the river or way east!!

                    Cheers

I got a 1st dan Black belt in an MA that I sucked at, TaeKwonDo. I looked back at a video of my test 7 years ago (I'm 19 now) and I was so clumsy and non-intense that it was a wonder that I passed. My forms sucked, my kicks had no smoke in them, My sparring was laughable, and my posture left much to be desired.(I was about 5-10 and 230 lbs at about 30% fat) I don't think I deserved it so I don't acknowledge that I recieved it. With my size I would've been better off taking Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, or Krav Maga, something where you stay on the ground. I ended up leaving the school to pursue other activities and have started to train again to get myself into the physical condition needed should I decide to study another discipline

The only belts I wear are for keeping my pants up. I know I’ve said that I would like a Black Belt in BJJ, but that seems unlikely now... Now, I don’t think it really matters to me. I don’t learn martial arts for belts. Rather, I take what works for me and move on. I train in my Under Armor and Hunter Vale Tudo shorts with NHB gloves.
Thats about all they're good for. Belts might've represented skill level once but now in a lot of the schools that I've watched classes in, it seems that they just represent someone who's been around for awhile that knows a few more forms or katas than the next guy. I've seen white belts with more skill than the black belts teaching them.

Anyone here in a Thai Boxing gym? How much do they charge monthly ? Or a 3 month plan or 6 months, w/e it is. I thought it was around 250 $ a month.

Grading is free, belt is free, certificate is free!
Which is good, because I spend all my money on BJJ classes and tournament entry!

Yes, they like me, but it's free for all students. We just pay a monthly fee, and we don't pay for any gradings or anything. For me, because I teach a few lessons a week, I also get all my training (6 days a week) for free too. And to think someone on this list told me a while ago to give up Shotokan! Why on earth would I, when it's being given to me???
