Shotokan teaches some bad habits. Very linear, very hard style.

From what I understand they truly believe in the 'one shot one kill' scenario.

Please enlighten me if this is not the case.

I don't use belts. As it was once said, belts are for holding up pants.

My train of thought is that if you want to judge my skill then you'll just have fight me (more or less). I've seen black belts that couln't fight their way out of a wet paper bag, but then they knew their moves, history, whatever very well when it came time to test. Does that really show one's functional skill? Hell, no. Then I must ask: why should that be what someone's "rank" be based on? That's a question most people don't bother to ask. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.

That's not the case, only that is the way you should excecute a technique, as if you have to kill someone with that one blow

If they would really think so they would not have waza ari (half point) scorings
It doesn't differ that much from Judo in the sense that in Judo you go for the ippon , but no-one thinks that one throw would finish the fight

What is more strange is the fact that Shotokan claims to stress hipmovement but that the deep stances acctually do not allow for much hipmovement
Or that forms HAVE to end where they start, even if it is not possible without smuggling a bit ( Tekki Shodan)

                      Hi,

Yes, shotokan is a very strong/linear style, and at the beginning, students defintely do a lot of stepping straight forward/backward in their basics, etc.

I also agree with the comment that the style claims to stress hip movement, but then employs deep stances that hinder that.

However, I don't see either of these concepts as being negatives.

Firstly, we teach beginners to move straight forward and backward in their basics in order to improve their strength and coordination. The typical shotokan stance is very deep, and it's quite difficult to move forward or backward in it, but we train to do that in basics, so that in sparring, when we relax the stance, we move with more speed and agility.

Likewise, when you train to use your hips in a deep stance, when you then spar in the higher stance, the hip movement comes very naturally, and is very pronounced.

Shotokan is not all straight lines, stepping forward and lunch punching and front kicking! We use 'tai sabaki' - sideways evasive movements, round techniques, and speed and agility just as much as any other stand-up style.

And I for one don't believe in 'one shot one kill'! If I did, why would I even bother praciticing combinations??? I'm certainly not that arrogant about my skill! I execute every technique completely, but I make no assumptions about what will or will not happen.

I am a 2nd dan in Goju Ryu and Meibu-Kan Karate but gave up karate for something more realistic for self-defense.

                            I now do Pankration.
