freak show nature of K-1

I think that our or the Japanese fan base for K-1 is into freak shows in general. Why do we still pay 30 to 40 bucks to watch pay-per-view Tyson fights? It's because we are still interested in seeing what crazy shit he will do next. How many people who fork out the cash are actually training in boxing or fighting? The same for K-1. I would bet that of the actual ticket buying fans of K-1 in Japan, less than 5% are actual kickboxers. You see, K-1 is on Japanese TV for free, so there is no pay-per-view. Therefore, the live event is one of the major $$$ makers for the enterprise. Kickboxers who barely scrape by aren't dishing out the $$$ for tickets, that is for sure. Anyway, here, people doing MMA and kickboxing may be a larger % of those who buy K-1 and UFC and Pride events on pay-per-view. Nevertheless, while perfect Muay Thai form fighters do sell, ex-Sumo grand champions vs. Bob Sapp sell more. Of the 95% who are ticket buying fans, but don't practice kickboxing or what have you, are more entertained by freak shows than by anything else.
But, not all is lost. The good news is that K-1 Max, the 70 kilo division has now taken over the usual K-1 heavyweights for viewing %. Demand begets supply. So, we should expect more of these events. Here, we are guaranteed better, professional matches fought by fighters who are all 70 kilos, not 250 kilos. So, if you are tired of what is becoming typical K-1 bullshit, then you can always refocus on K-1 Max to get your kickboxing fix.
