  • Homemade Martial arts equipment

Hey. I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I recently headed to a garage sale and got the following items:

5 old tires (two smaller ones with hubcaps)
several pieces of unused styrofoam boards
3, 72" stretchable cords with hooks on the ends (the kind you use on luggage)
20 feet of yellow nylon rope
some old baseball padding (shin guards, face guard)

Okay, so I've tried to find ideas as how to make a tire dummy for weapons and empty hand training (mostly weapons). Can anyone give me any tips as to how to construct one? I plan to hang it from a tree outside my home.

The rest of the objects are more obscure. I was thinking of turning the foam boards into a striking pad. How can I use the stretchable cords?

The baseball padding is more obvious. Shin guards will probably work well for practicing kicks to the shins :-)

So yeah, if anyone has any ideas, feel free to share. I saw a book by Michael Janich called "Homemade Martial Arts Training Equipment". I'd rather spend my money on the parts necessary to build the gear as opposed to buying the book...so if anyone could give me some advice I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Cool man. Garage sells turn up some good stuff sometime. One of my projects was to take furniture from a dump and refurbish it, but that's another topic...

Ok so you're going to hang the tire from the tree. How big is this tire? 26", 32"? You will have 20' of rope to work with. You want to maximize rope length to minimize swing of the tire (right?) You don't want to strike this thing and have to reset it all the time.

If you simply tie the rope around the inside of the tire, you'll use valuable rope length. Try boring a hole through the tire with a drill bit of a certain size. Then match that size with one of those rings (shaped like a real old-fashioned key, has screw threading around its length and a ring at its head). You may have to look around at your hardware store.

Once the ring is tightly screwed into the tire hole, find a washer and a nut of the same size and screw them on tightly inside the tire where your ring-screw head as come through. If its screwed on really tight, it should be able to handle the weight of the tire.

Bring the rope through the loop, have someone hold the tire for you, while you tie it around the highest and sturdiest branch of your tree so the tire hangs between 3-5' from the ground. You'll need a ladder. Hopefully, the rope will be able to handle the tensile force from the weight of the tire otherwise you could buy thicker, hardier rope.

              Hope this helps.
