Have not seen all of ongbak, but i assume that they have it based on traditional muay thai with a bunch of hollywood crap thrown in. Some call the old muay thai, muay boran, but i belive that is just a name to get money. Chai

I am not stupid, i know modern muay thai is a super efficant form of the old muay thai, they just took all the effective stuff and left out all the other wierd/fancy moves. But i think the majority of the people who say they are teaching muay boran, dont autually know muay boran, they are just using the name to attract people, like shaolin.

again, just to make shure yall know, i am not saying that all muay boran instructors are bad, i am shure there are some good ones out there expecially in thailand. But i think the majority of people that say claim teach it, just use it for the name

- - If you hit him hard, where you want to, and get the effect you want, whatever you're doing, you're doing it right.
- - I make it a point to stick around with people smarter than myself. If I learn just 10% of all they know in their fields of expertise I end up becoming smarter than most people.
Ong Bak dup-dupa-dupa ong bak doo-la-da Ong bak doo doo pa doo, yeah yeah! (mmm..bop)
Give the movie a break peeps, movie making is different, in the effort to make things realistic we might actually miss enjoyment in movies. we can't have all MA movies looking like an MMA match would we?
but i really have to give the movie credit. I haven't seen so many uses of the elbow in my life!! When you're sure a foot will lash out an elbow does! And did you see that leg break? I didn't only see it i felt it!
Of course a lot of stuff was cheesy like the steroids, the chase scene and the motorcycle helmet break but i'd give kudos to the Thais.
What was that?...What style did... oh sorry..welll...ummm...I dunno.
Cool movie though. and if we're smart enough we'd know where the fake and the possible is (i didn't say real because it is a movie).

Actually old MT as you put it, changed to modern so that there werent so many injuries, its basically the same, it just had more moves that wouldnt work in a sport arena because it was a combative art that was used to kill.

Ong Bak
Interestingly enough, I just watched Ong Bak for the first time last night, and I noticed some different things than people here. He tried to do a lot of 'old style' muay Thai, and for the most part it worked. When he wrapped his hands in knotted ropes to simulate muay Kacheuk (to cut or to wrap) he forgot the knots start across the knuckles then curve around to the insides of the forearms for rasping the throat during the plumb. By the way, there were some great neck torques, a nice touch particularly Thai in style. And once I noticed he did an overhand round elbow against a knife, a definite no-no because it exposes the inside bottom of the upper arm to a cut. But, it is a movie, and the man is an incredible martial artist & gymnast. The mai soks (arm protectors) finally got some screen time, that is good. His staff work was lacking in footwork, looking more Chinese and thus older than modern Krabi-Krabong staffwork. I liked it, regardless. I give it a thumb up...lol

Just to clarify Muay Boran means the ancient art of Muay Thai and encapsulates the old styles of fighting such as Muay Kaat Chueag, Muay Plam, Krabii Krabong to name just a few. It is true that a lot of people have jumped on the Muay Boran bandwagon and claim to teach Muay Boran when in fact they are teaching Muay Thai. However it is important that we don't take anything away from Muay Boran, as its the foundations that Muay Thai was built upon.
As for the Ong Bak film the teachniques you saw are a combination of Muay Boran and Gymnastics. He attended a school not to dis-similar to what Jackie Chan and Samo Hung attended. He learnt about acting, gymastics and martial arts.
I hope this clears some things up.

plese, i'm very disapointed to see a person who claims to have known Muaythai and yet has no respect for its traditional form, ancient muaythai is very effective(as well as any other martial arts IF YOU TRAIN WELL ENOUGH AND HAVE ENOUGH TECHNIQUES AND SKILLS), for those of you who do not know or have not yet come across a real master of the art, please don't speak ill of them.
i meant not to be rude, but i am thai and i cannot stand anyone saying such things about the traditional arts of my nation.
