    Muay Thai and Kick Boxing

This is a topic that has being raised a number of times. I would like to shed some light on both.

Muay Thai is based on the older art of Muay Boran. Muay Boran encapsulated all the different Thai fighting systems such as Muay Plum, Krabi Kabong, etc. It was used on the battle field to defend Siam (Thailand) against its envaders and it was a complete fighting system that incorporated weapons as well. Over the centuries Muay Thai was born. Muay Thai has strong spirtual beliefs and it should be known that the majority of eastern martial arts follow buddism. That is why you will see similarities in the arts. As time went on Muay Thai saw the introduction of the Queenberrys rules of boxing. This saw the introduction of weight catagories, rounds and a restriction on some of the tradition techniques such as sweeping, ploughing, etc. The primary reason was to make Muay Thai more entertaining and a safer as a sport.

As everyone is already aware Muay Thai incorporates Boxing, Elbows, Knees, Kicks, Grappling and Clinch work. However I think what a lot of people overlook are the deep spiritual beliefs assoicated with Muay Thai such as the Buddism, Ram Muay, Mongkon and the arm band (sorry I forgot the Thai word for that).

Kick Boxing comes from Japan. It happened in the 1960's/70's. A japanese Karate master visited Thailand and saw how effective Muay Thai was and went back to Japan and incorporated some Muay Thai moves into Karate and called it Kick Boxing. This eventually spread and fractioned across the globe that is why there are so many different styles of kick boxing. This is also the case with Muay Thai. You will see different styles of Muay Thai depending on what part of Thailand you go to. Kick Boxing was primary Box and Kick. However knees have now started to be introduced. There is still a lot of confusion about Kick Boxing and Muay Thai, but this comes down to mis advertising and education. It should also be noted a lot of Muay Thai go under the Kick Boxing umbrella in the UK, as it is easy to get insured.

I think the main point that should be made is that Muay Thai carries a lot of traditions and spirtual beliefs, whereas Kick Boxing is more of a sport.

I hope this clears a few things up. If you have any comments or questions about what I wrote please share them.

    Thanks,

    John
