who said i go around telling people im tough? i dont do that.were did u get that from? i dont like people saying i do karate because karate is not what i do. some of my friends ask me what i do, and i tell them i do judo , or i do muay thai, yet they always say to me, " dont u have to go to ur karate class?" and whatnot. i dont do karate. i have nothing against karate, its just not what i do.i feel as if people arent taking me seriously when the keep refering to what i do as something else. its kinda disrespectful to me, and the art that i respect so much. also i dont tell people about my bruises, and i dont tell people about how i train. these are only things u assumed, and wrongly assumed at that.Originally posted by sslinky(Well, it would be boring without him)
I think people "enjoy" getting hit, not because they are masochistic, but because (assuming the injury isn't serious) they know that all the bumps and bruises are ultimately toughening them up.
Why are you bothered that people call your muay thai training karate? Because you think that's not tough enough? Ever noticed how the really tough people don't need to go around telling people how hard they are and how often they train and how many bruises they've got? They know. And that's all they need to know.
One other thing, you mentioned that getting smashed to pieces fills the empty void inside of you (very deep btw!) - perhaps you should try to fill your void by training hard on your technique/skill/fitness and concentrating on becoming a good fighter instead of a punch bag?

I wasn't having a go at you, I was just trying to work out why you were so bothered about it, and I assumed it was because you thought that karate was inferior to what you actually do and therefore these people weren't giving you your due credit. Obviously I was wrong. Although I'm still not sure why you think it's disrespectful? I don't think people aren't taking you seriously, it's just something that you're interested in, but they're not. I didn't say that you didn't train hard. You said something like "the pain fills the empty void inside of me" - all I was saying was that if you feel like your life is empty then instead of looking to fill it with pain, perhaps you could focus more on other aspects of your training which might be more beneficial than being mashed up?
Have you seen the film Fight Club btw? Does it ring any bells?

Hard training is fine, But if you are seeking injury then you have not yet learned the cumulative effect of injuries.
Bruises are the name of the game.
But torn muscles, stitches, broken bones and concusions are the fast lane out of martial arts. Or at the very least the slow road to training.

Well,
I've had my faced numbed for 6 months,
I had both my hamstrings torn, one took 5 years to recover
I've had a broken leg, broken hand, and a few chipped teeth.
And stitches in my lip and head a few times.
The worst part about all that is it messed with my training.
There are things worse than dying.

Pinning people who train in MMA or MA as Fight Club types is just like pinning fraternity/sorrority people as Beverly Hills 90210 types.
Its easier and less risky to type-cast people from far away, rather than getting to really know them when they are standing in front of you.
