  • Desperate Request for West Yorkshire Muay Thai Clubs

Hey, I've been searching for ages now, I really want to move out of American kickboxing and into Muay Thai.

There are but a few problems, the club in my town on www.muaythaiuk.org.uk, I called the number, I was informed that he had retired, but he very very nicely provided me with information as to where his brother taught, and the student who took over from him.

His brother teaches in a very unfriendly area to my type (i.e. 5ft8 people with long hair) and at 7-8:30 on a tuesday night, I honestly would not feel comfortable in that area, it would also be about 50 minutes travelling.

His student teaches at the same place I do American Kickboxing, but once a week, I feel more confident in this area, but I don't want to be restricted to Muay Thai once a week, I was really hoping for twice a week if not more, and preferably on a tuesday, seen as my college timetable gives me tuesday and wednesday off.

There is a school in bately, that teaches other arts Goshinkwai Combat, Sambo Wrestling, Judo Vale Tudo, However, I apologise for my ignorance, I really do not know what any of these are apart from Judo.

If I can't find a Muay Thai club I would like to do some form of wrestling art, or some other effective art.
Something that will give me a good workout and strength and work on the street, if I hear the worlds "jumping front kick" one more time, someone will get stabbed.

Batley isnt such a bad are for me, I know people there who I could run to if something really bad happened, and I know the area quite well, What do you know/think of the arts they teach there?

Sorry if im being ignorant, I am searching on google and things, I just really want to try and get all the information I can.

    Thankyou.

come on Harry, one of the things (i guess) you are training in MT for is to toughen up a bit, no?, most if not all Boxing gyms in the UK are in failry bad/cheap areas. just get yourself along there mate. what surprises me is that your in yorkshire, anyone would think that you have to walk thru sth east London late at night or downtown Joburg, or Moscow.
i have spent a lot of time in each of the above and never had more than a few harsh words spoken (by me that is).

Learn to walk confidently but naturally with your head nice and even and look stupid twats right in the fucking eye.

additionally, at the moment I travel 30 miles to my boxing gym, crossing into another county, with 2 crappy bus routes to deal with, a real pain but worth it.
like i said above, just get to the best gym for you and don't panic about the area, especially in Yorkshire mate.
        Good luck.

So the moral of the story = Anyone looks at you funny, turn round and say "Carry on faggots"?

The gyms are still proving really hard to find, It's a battle to even get through on phone to next to any of the places.
At the moment I'm considering mixing Vale Tudo and Muay Thai, but as I said before, very few places list class times on the internet or in phone listings, and to make it worse, very few places teach lessons until after 6pm ish, which makes it irritating because you useually end up calling when they are doing the lesson you want to be in.

          /keeps on trying.

dont take my comments in a derogatory way harry because that is not how i mean it but i just get a bit annoyed thinking about the type of yobs that hang out in the street, thus making life difficult for people like yourself, all being said, i suppose its easy for me to say without thinking it through because I am 6' 3" and 105kg, so I guess people just dont pick on me in bad areas.
Now, believe me I know what you are talking about when you find it hard to get in touch with anywhere, i went through that loads of times, I am stuck in a shitty rural area for the time being and the only way i can get to train is with expensive private 1 on 1 lessons because I currently have no transport and the rural buses stop at around 6pm, exactly as you say, the most common times for martial arts/sports lessons.

Anyway, the best thing you can possibly do is get to some lesson somewhere no matter what, they wil build up your confidence no end and in about a year you will never be worried about walking through a bad area. carry on searching and planning the logistics, if you have a car you have no damn excuse at all mate.

I'm only 16, so no car for me
I'm taking a look at a boxing place in my town, its luckily, easy to find, even for me, who can miss a building inbetween two massive gas containers?

If I can't get a hold of any other muay thai places, I can settle for the once a week place, It's better than not going at all.

                  The US Airforce??

Boxing is great stuff mate. I've just taken to training with an amateur boxer and my hand speed is improving by the day. I never thought I'd like it much after 4 years of Muay Thai but I'm lovin it lovin it lovin it

It will give ya a good base for Muay Thai when ya finally get a car and can go find a gym (if ya still want to)
