  • Chiang Mai Thailand training

Can anyone make any recommendations regarding eating, sleeping arrangements, and must see or, do activities in Chiang Mai? I may be going there to train for a month. I've never been to Thailand before, any suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks in advance, Denali

      c0rrupt,
I'm considering Kru Villalobos' camp. I'm fairly new to martial arts (14 mos kyokushin karate) and am middle aged so, my intention is to get into better shape (w/o dropping dead), learn the basics of Muay Thai (hopefully it will improve my sparring technique), get exposed to Buddhist philosophy and meditation, live in Thailand for a month (do some sightseeing), and develop some friendships.

My wife is going over on business for a week or so, and what turned out to initially be a "what can I do while she's working?" ...is maybe looking like the possibility of training for 3-4 weeks. Lanna looks like a great camp if...I were much younger, competitive, etc...

Seems like a number of people have had positive experiences with Kru Villalobos.

Do you have experience with either camp? Have you been to Chiang Mai? Any information is appreciated.

Haven't been to either, but it's quite hard to into Kru Villalobos' camp as he only accepts a certain number of students, however he WILL NOT train fighters as he's involved inherently with the bhudist philosophys which seems to be a good thing for what your looking for.

Lanna is good for what I want as it's a fighting camp producing many champions. But I would recomend that you spend time there for the physical side and the experience.

        Hope that helps.

How much experience do you have in Muay Thai? Have you trained in Thailand? Are you Thai? Any experiences you can share?

How about any advice for a novice Muay Thai in the making?
          Thanks for the information.

            Hi Denali,

I've been to both camps, and it sounds like Pedro's camp is for you. You can email him at kruu@ancientmuaythai.com. Definately stop by Lanna as well. There is also Siam No. 1, Olympia, and others...

While you're there you should check out Chaing Mai Rock Climbing Adventures...One of the guys who owns it, Josh Morris, used to work at my parent's restraunt.
              Pretty sick routes too.

I've been training for about 2 years now... Had a few fights nothing special. But This year going into next I will be commiting alot more and going for important fights i.e. vacant titles ect. Just haven't had the time really... (should take a leaf out of my mate Brooks Miller's [Khun Kao] book, he takes time of work and does his fights... very dedicated bloke. You should contact him for a wealth of knowledge or you might get lucky and he could read this thread and impart some wisdom.

I started out with the SMTC camp (scottish muay thai council) and now I'm with Sitnarong london (Master Skens's camp) As far as your concerned just keep up what your doing have guts determination and keep a broad mind for other things.

                  OctaviusBP,
what's a typical day of training like at Kru Villalobos' camp?
Can you recommend any guesthouses nearby? Have you heard of this place: http://www.redhibiscus.com/facil.html thanks

                  C0rrupt,
thanks for the info and good luck in going forward. I'm almost an old geezer so, I'm hoping to improve physically and mentally thru Muay Thai and possibly compete in a Sabaki tournament while representing my dojo.

                  Garland,
Muay Thai and rock climbing... what are the clinic/hospital facilities like in Chiang Mai???? Thanks, I'll try to look'em up.

At Pedro's camp, it's a little different. The "Camp" is in the front of his house, and he actually teaches in "classes". Fighting camps in Thailand, do not work that way. He also limits his students, so you should make sure you contact him before hand to be sure he has room.

I do not know that guesthouse, but I would recommend staying at the Chang Khon in town. It's cheap and clean, and you can find a place from there. Exploring is half the fun.
