  • Martial Arts Expertise Sure didn't Help this Guy

I think we all overestimate the fightig ability of any martial artist. In the end skill in martial arts really don't account for much.

"If I had been on my guard I wouldn't have been hurt,"

Put that in the 'well duh' section of the "Quotes for martial artists to live by" thread.

                  I gotta disagree.
Martial Arts teaches you to be aware in situations that could/will escalate into some type of physical altercation.
However, in this case I don't think any teacher would have or should have expected a student to assault them.

Blind-sided or not, It just wasn't a situation where you would expect that type of behavior to happen.

I don't think any teacher should have to be "On Guard" for a possible attack from a student.

If he was truly good at and understand martial art, he would not have turned his back.

Johnny LaCoste, whom many people think was the greatest, or at least one of the greatest, Filipino Martial Arts masters ever, was shotgunned to death. He must have misunderstood something. Unless, of course, I misunderstand your comment, Fanman

I lean towards the views of Mennoch1207. I must say though, that I'm almost always on my guard, I'm just a little edgy. I think that's mostly from being the youngest of 3 brothers. If I wasn't on guard at all times, they'd kick the crap outta me.... They don't do that anymore.

I do also have to agree about the overestimation of "martial arts experts". It seems to me that real fighting experience outstrips martial arts training in many situations. Though I think a martial artist who has some fighting experience is at a distinct advantage. The martial artist should be able to better control the situation compared to your average Joe.

Over the years I've had opportunity to spar with a good number of martial artists from a good number of styles, and I've found that most of them don't even have much semi-contact experience, let alone full contact.

I've learned to always be on my guard; I don't think that guy was expecting that, I mean, martial arts expert or not, an elbow and a groin knee, those are like two killer blows to two very fragile areas.

I've learned to always be on my guard though after trying to show my sister self-defense techniques in case of a rape, and she just said, "If some guy tries to grab me, I'll hit 'em like this, and I'd punch 'em like that.." and she acted out the seen as she was saying it, so of course, POW! right in the face, she gave me a knuckle sandwich. And I had specifically not tried to duck her punches cuz I was thinking, for a split second, "She is my sister, she won't hit me..." then I got hit. Luckily it wasn't a hard punch though, lol.

Okay I have to add my two cents here. What makes you all believe that this guy was an "expert"? Yeah it says it in the article but frankly I trust the media about as much as I trust the Mafia. Alright there it is, my two cents.

Shoot, yeah very good point, the media people who wrote this probably know as much about martial arts as a squirrel.
