  • Training in NYC. Which would you choose?

Which would you choose? Here are the options:

    A) The Wat: Instructor: Kru Phil Nurse, European and British Welterweight Champion. Record 32-3-0. Beautiful facilities, unlimited Muay Thai, western boxing, and Jai Yet Yoga (stretching yoga, which I probably won't do if it seems girly). Cost $150 a month. Has indoor boxing ring, heavy bags, all typical muay thai training equipment.

    B) Five Points Fitness. Instructor: Kru Steve Milles. Kru of the International Muay Thai Association under Master Toddy. HUGE facilities (2 floors). Unlimited Muay Thai, Kali (which I heard includes fighting with a bladed weapon, and grappling?!), and full weight lifting facilities. Has indoor ring, heavy bags, the works. Costs $165/month.

I guess my main concern is which makes a better combination: Muay Thai+Western Boxing or Muay Thai+Kali.

Anyone here practice Kali? Does it help in your ground game at all? I know BJJ would be the best for developing a strong ground game but right now it's out of the picture for me because BJJ in NYC is WAAAY too expensive and the lesser known schools that are affordable just don't seem worth it (i.e. $150 for twice a week, 1 hour classes comprised of 30 mins of warmup exercies).

So, the question is...which would you choose, option A or B?

Ok, nice suggestion, but that's not one of the options. My options are Muay Thai+Boxing and Muay Thai+Kali.

        I went with 5point.

The wat is much smaller, has hardwood floors (ouch), fewer bags, and no super-heavy bags (5point has some that are built around poles -- you can kick them as hard as you want).

On the other hand, the wat has dedicated Western boxing classes (and sparring, I think). My impression was that Phil at the wat focuses more on conditioning, while Steve/Simon at 5point focus on timing/technique.

Both gyms have lots of people fighting out of them. Can't really go wrong with either.

I noticed the issue with size at the Wat too. It looked so huge on the site but when I went to check it out, it seemed kinda crowded. And yeah they have fewer heavy bags. Thanks a lot for you input. Its good to hear someone's opinion who's actually been to both places. I heard of another place called Ultimate Muay Thai on 28th and 5th. Gonna check it out today after work.

"that place" referring to the Wat or Ultimate Gym? The guy at Ultimate Gym (Jeff, I think) said "this is the only "real" muay thai school in NYC, don't listen to what the others say", which immediately put me off because I know Kru Nurse and the both instructors at 5 points (Steve, Simon) are legit fighters/instructors.

If you are willing to drive over to Jersey, you may find some better bargains and outstanding instuctors, dojos/dojangs/gyms.
