Interesting but why go there when there are genuine authentic masters of old style to go to? Also I wouldnt go to thailand to learn wing chun. The old style of mt there is made up by the teacher after being ejected from the chaiya system by the teacher in Bangkok. His style may be good or even excellent but for authentic training we will need to go to the thai teachers. Just my opnion of course and opinions vary.

I believe Mr Villalobos (director/founder of the Ancient Muay Thai Academy in Chiang Mai) studied Wing Chun from Sifu Francis Fong, one of the foremost practitioners in the world, while he was living in Atlanta.

He also studied Krabi-Krabong, Muay Kacheuk, Muay Thai Boran and other Thai National Martial Arts at the Buddhai Swan in Bangkok, where he was a longtime student. No one I have talked to has anything bad to say about Pedro or his school.

Nor was he "ejected" from Ajarn Lek's school in Bangkok...

By his own admission, the material taught as bare knuckle is his own amalgamation. I stand by my post, again why go there when you can go learn from the authentic teachers the full spectrum of the system or systems.

Going there next week

I'm going to train with Kru Villalobos for several reasons.

First, he comes highly recommended. Second, he teaches a blend of arts that I have an interest in (My background is JKDC, not pure MT, I enjoy Wing Chun, weapons arts, and grappling). Third, I am not interested in competition at present, and he does not seem to be a competion-oriented instructor.

My experience with Wing Chun politics has made me extremely tired of notions of lineage and authenticity. Of course I have no desire to study under someone who is misrepresenting themselves, but like Chalambok, I have never heard anything bad said about the Muay Thai Sangka Academy or its instructor.

Interesting but I dont think you need to validate your choices. The thread said old style MT on it and i responded to such. I just wouldnt understand if that was the reason for going to thailand why you would not chose the authentic masters but its each individuals choices. His program is his own as you stated. You can learn even ring muay thai on several levels, not every has to compete. Its just understanding the landscape and the depth of what is available to you.

As far as wing chun, I was never involved in the politics of it, went to HK and learned openly 7 days a week, more than I could ever handle. That was my experience with that. The teachers were very nice and very open.

No worries!

I learned my Wing Chun in Singapore and was caught up in the middle of a "who was taught the TRUE Wing Chun from Sifu" struggle. That kind of stuff is more exhausting than the drills!
