  • thai boxing and boxing

Ive heard that training in boxing first makes you a better thai fighter, now I have done both, and realized that for me it messes me all up!!! I boxed at different boxing gyms on and off, and then tried my hand at some muay thai. I was immediately told not to bob and weave, felt uncomfortable with the movement of muay thai. I finally started getting it down, and then it so happens I get a new job and move away, no more muay thai, so I fiind boxing gyms, that have a daily fee, and go when I can, im completely off in boxing, I lose my agility. anybody have similar experiences?

ok, boxing does help with the striking part of it. not the mobility. they are two completely different arts. they are interchangable at points, but not all. I never really had that problem because I was taught both ways of moving and sort of merged it into one form, this is of course over the past 8 years. I'm not really sure what to tell you other than train in both and you will find a happy median.

When I was learning both I had trouble distinguishing how to move, but after a while you just learn the differences and are able to do them.

Don't forget your stance in muay thai is going to be higher up and a little more balance between both legs. No bobbing and weaving, because you could get kneed or kicked in the head. You can still slip punches though.
