  • Spinning back kick KO

A fella named Louiseau, trained in TKD, recently won an MMA match by successfully landing a spinning back kick. He executed it defensively against an overhand right - a common self-defense/sparring move taught in TKD. I've taken some heat for saying this, but a few fundamental TKD techniques, practiced repetitively in contact sparring, can work.

    Here's the clip.

What exactly was the other guy trying to do?

A while back I was cruising the net for clips of Muay Thai. One had tons of clips of fights. One was some famous Thai up against someone. At the start of the round they came out, the Thai spun and landed a perfect spinning back kick like that one at just pristene distance for maximum power and landed it right on the opponents pelvis/lower abdoment (though I would guesse he actually hit the pelvis bone, either in direct contact or pushing through the flesh). The opponent went down. Probably passed out from the pain. It was gnarly.

That's a very nice kick, good to see basics like that in practice.

Worst Punch ever. That was sloppy, poorly executed, and he deserved to get kicked in the gut. Nice kick, is this guy solely a tkd practitioner or what.

Yeah, bad punch, head is dipped way to far down.

          Nice reaction by Loiseau.
He stunned him with the kick, and obviously hurt him, but he went down to avoid Loiseau following him into the fence with a flying knee, then Loiseau just mounted and pounded.

Both of the "Ultimate Fighters" (Griffin and Quarry) won their fights in the first round... Griffin by Rear Naked Choke and Quarry by punches.

            oops

the success of that blunder kick was not because of the kick or the kicker is was because of the folly of the kickie.lets call it happenstance. the kick wasnt even executed correctly! (and these guys are supposed to be professionals!?) i guess thats TKD for you...............

He had actually done about 4-5 of those spinning back kicks throughout the fight, some connecting, some not.

I agree it just happen to land solidly, but how many times could that be said about other fights....that's pretty much how fights happen, sometimes things just sneak through or someone lets their guard down....It's not so much a lucky kick, as it is just timing and lack of awareness on McCarthy's part...he was just trying to throw an overhand right and got caught leaving his side open and go stuck for it...

never turn your back on your opponent

never turn your back on your opponent these kind of techniques are great for show but just not safe enough for a real fight. just my 2 cents

I agree completely, but you have to take into consideration that most high level (kicking) martial artists can kick and return to proper stance/position faster than most people can make a move to come in on them.

The kick was a 6 out of 10 in form - it wasn't perfect, but when you're fighting you sometimes have to sacrifice form so long as the power is there.

This is a MMA match, so chances are the guy probably dabbles in TKD. The punch was a sloppy overhand, so the kick worked wonders.

I'd like to see a real karate master enter and demonstrate perfect execution. The last Karate master to enter an MMA event was Minoko Ichihara sp?

                      Google the following matches

                      Ichihara vs. Gracie
                      VanClief vs. Gracie
                      Bosset vs. Severn

and last but not least, Fred Ettish.

                      on the "Good Side"...

                      Hackney vs. Yarbrough
                      Hall vs. Kitao

Which UFC is that? and don't tell me it's not that ring and that ref are UFC staples. Yes some techniques can be used effectively, BUT let's see him land that with the same affect twice.

                          All it takes is once.

There's a rare bunch of fellows who can make spinning kicks work...rare.

An American fighter, Manson Gibson, fought in Thailand. He won as many fights as he lost. However, many of the fights he won were with spin kicks and by KO.

I would say it's a combination of both.
Loiseau is a skilled kicker and McCarthy just stepped in at the wrong time.
