  • other styles vs. Thai kickboxing/ taking lessons

I went to a local pro match that had guys wearing boxing gloves and foot pads. They were not throwing any leg kicks, or knees, and they were all wearing pants. Do you know what style this would be? This was in Greensboro NC by the way, if that helps. Would this be considered American Kickboxing? Is there such a thing? I e-mailed the promotions place and they said they also have kickboxing classes behind the place where they hold fights. Would this be a good place to go? Can someone give me some good advice?

It was cool to see some live fighting, but it was really different than what I expected. What other styles of kickboxing are there besides Muay Thai?

    yep

been there done that, american k.b. is basically boxing-kicking(came over from tkd rude awaking via the boxing aspect LOL) btw most pro american rules k.b. dudes go into pro boxing or mma so they can at least get payed since there's no money in amer kb or kb/mt in general but like every champ has at least mad ammie boxing skillls foe shoe

I found a website, you're right I'll probably find somewhere else

      Hey, I found the website.

I think the place probably sucks. Thanks for the advice. It looks mostly like a ghetto boxing place. Nowadays when someone says kickboxing, you don't know if they are even talking about fighting. One place in the phone book said "kickboxing" but it turned out to be a bunch of yuppie women doing punches, and straight kicks with music. Someone should really kill that Billy Blanks guy for that Tae Boe shit. He really sold out martial arts on that. I would rather attack someone who takes Tae Boe than someone with experience in highschool wrestling.

some clubs are amaznig, some are terrible. you just need to live with it. i think the main difference is a good muay thai club you get kicked in while your there, a kickboxing club you leave unhurt. different styles in the ring to say the least... just find a club where when you leave your too tired to move and/or want to throw up. or do actually throw up. stomach conditioning has to be experienced to be believed

i hate boxercise.... all that crap. its not good, its not clever or worthwhile. it achieves nothing. altho i met a pretty fine women who does it... i should call her some time

I dont fully agree with the fact that you will leave a kickboxing club unhurt. I mean sure their physical conditioning is nothing compared to Muay Thai, but they still spar and their boxing program is intense generally, and we all know how much sparring boxers do.

Funny thing nowadays, many so called "American kickboxing gyms" incorporate shin kicks and I have even seen knees being taught. I dont understand why they would label it American KB when Muay Thai seems to be much more attractive to the public. We've had about 15 people join our gym just because its Muay Thai (and because of Ong Bak, which I respect, but that is not 100% Muay Thai).

I love muay thai, but everyone is doing it.

Time to keep that progressive attitude alive and branch out.

                    uhhh...ok.

I've trained in muay thai for 2 years with my very first lesson in Mejiro gym and it opened my eyes, but I've spent more time since then on boxing.

I'd like to continue boxing as my base, maybe train in thai now and then as a refresher, but I'm open to anything that's legit.

Not necessarily true. I've sparred with some ranked american kickboxers and they can kick and punch really hard. Most of their footwork, fightgame and defense comes straight out of boxing plus they can trade kicks (above the waste) pretty well. They work on conditioning as well as boxers, but they aren't used to the muay thai game, thai style kicks to the legs or clinch work.

American kickboxing has changed since the days of the exhibition matches against muay thai. They take their boxing work more seriously now.

Do a google on Manson Gibson a.k.a. "Black Bruce Lee"

fair play. i havent met a ranked american kickboxer but i imagine they will be able to hit hard. so can a thai kickboxer. also, based on a few ppl ive met, thai punching isnt that much of a second to boxing.
the difference i meant was that youre not likely to do the fight conditioning in a kickboxing club. last time i left thai i could only just walk and had been hit in the gut often enough so i quite liked the idea of throwing up. never seen that from normal kickboxing

Holding the pads for knee drills is probably a good way to gradually build your gut. The best way is from medicine ball contact drills plus traditional ab excercises.
