  • Glove Weight for Beginner

What glove weight should I be using as a beginner? I am 290# (super heavyweight). Going on second month of training. I am thinking 18oz or 16oz. Since I am new, I don't know if the heavier gloves slow you down and make you a slower puncher or not?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

When I was training in JKD we were using 16 oz gloves pretty much all the time. In Thailand we used 16 oz for sparring, and 10 or 12 oz gloves for bag and pad work.

Heavier gloves are good for building endurance in your arms and shoulders. If you're worried about speed, make sure you do plenty of shadow-boxing without gloves. Punching with wieghts WILL slow you down, but 16 oz gloves should be ok.

As Aseepish said, I would suggest 16 oz. for sparring and 8-10 oz. bag/pad gloves, since you will generally be doing more pad/bag work then sparring your speed will improve with time
