        tibia hair line fracture

        hey all,

I live in australia, and the grand final for AFL (australia football league) was on about 3 weekends ago, afterwards when our team lost (west coast eagles) few of my mates who were going for the opposing team started giving us s**t nicely, if thats possible :P
well it started as a little friendly wrestle going on and turned into a 20 man pile up with people jumping from everywhere(thats what too much beer consumption can do to people!!) someone also got a big elbow just at the top of the nose, between his eyebrows, and was sleeping for a while

someone landed on the back of my right lower leg, and i felt what i thought was a snap.. i got up and hubbled away. stayed out all that night then realised i couldnt walk properly.. went to doc, and got x-rays and found out i have a hairline fracture in tibia and ripped muscle/nerves to the right of my shin bone

think this teaches me a lesson i spose..

back to thread discussion, i have to agree with a few of the responces about muay thai hurting more at the time but from what i`ve seen in boxing--> effects can last a LONG time.

definitely. but if your one of the very rare people who manage to break their leg that severely thats gonna be pretty permenant. i cant even imagine how much that would hurt. what a kick tho... well, more what a block. so thats how its meant to be done...

anyone know of long term side effects from muay thai? id kinda like to know whats awaiting me in the future

Both sports require alot of mental and physical toughness, and when it comes to knockout blows in any sport in my opinion after a certain point it gets hard to grade pain. However from what ive seen from watching fights, training etc I personally have noticed that muay thai fights can vary incredibly more in terms of techniques and how they are played out then in traditional boxing. For example, one fight might be against a more hands oriented fighter with most of the "damage" being done from punches, whereas another fighter might be inclined to leg kick the hell out of you til you cant walk anymore. Also, it would be logical(to me) to assume that both fighters being similar builds/weights/skills in their relative sports, that a thai kick would be quite more powerful than say a hook. So if they both hit the same target(ribs, head etc) then it would seem that the kick would have a larger potential for pain, and maybe even damage(permanent etc.) Of course, as someone said kicks to the upper body are alot less common than punches to the face so youd have to weigh the differerences. I personally decided to train thai boxing because of its versatility, and how you get to learn how to be comfortable in a larger amount of fighting ranges. To me now, self defense isnt much of a worry for me because I live in a good neighbourhood in Edmonton, Canada with most(not all) of the homicides, assaults etc being involved in various illegal dealings(drugs, gangs, prostitution etc)and very few serious random street attacks(pretty much 0 in my neighbourhood.) In the end though I think its all up to you, Id suggest researching both of them, perhaps watching some fights or doing trial classes, and weighing what you want from the art and deciding from there. At any rate, I wish you good luck in your pursuits.
