  • training tips?

I have finally found an american KB class in my area and plan to enroll in the coming months. One condition: I am going to lose 25 lbs first (i'm 6'2", 255 - fat bastard), so I have a little prep time. I've been doing a lot of bag work at home - I bought a very old instructional video and have gleaned a few things from there.

I am after any beginner advice - Any comments will be appreciated. What should I be doing to specifically get ready for the class (more cardio, ab work, varied stretching, etc.)? Also, if you know of a good beginner video that would be nice too. Anything you can think of that you remember from your early years.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes. Start jogging. If you haven't been jogging up to this point, start slow, but ideally you want to be up to about 5 days a week. Also, stretching is good. I've heard yoga works pretty well also. If you want to lose the lbs., make sure you are eating well. Cut out a lot of the carbs (the starchy ones), and don't eat junk food.

thanks PitBull. I've been jogging, doing lots of ab work, and obviously doing basic punch/kick combos on the bag. Sounds like I should add more stretching. I may give the yoga a shot. I appreciate your input.

To be brutally honest I doubt you need to do much work prior to going to training. I mean thats what its all about really, training. Thats what will get you best in shape in a faster time. Although its not a bad idea if you planning on jumping straight into learning techniques more quickly without the extra bit of weight slowing you down.

Thanks WelshBG. I am using the class as an incentive to lose the weight. I think any new endeavor will begin better with a little less beer gut. I plan to enhance my stretching so that my old a$$ isn't crippled after the first week (I am 35). Your point is very valid - just like swimming, biking, etc.. - nothing gets you into "specific activity" shape like that specific activity. Thanks for the input.

Yeah best of luck then. KB would really sort your body out, it will turn all the excess fat into muscle and you will be ripped in no time.

cut out all the beer, start swimming, less stress on the knee joints etc + it's a good stretching exercise and the water is supporting you. hope that helps

thanks Jay. I've cut down on the brew for sure, and the swimming is a good idea, even if for nothing other than an occasional cross training activity.
