  • Suggestions for someone who wants to get into Muay Thai?

Hi, I really want to get into Muay Thai, but I don't know if I should. First, I'm 17, only 5'4, 115 lbs and have no prior martial arts experience. I don't know a lot about Muay Thai, except for it involves a lot of elbows and knees (mostly learned from UFC). Also, I am not flexible at all and have my endurance is horrible. My shins/ankles and wrists are all very thin. I'm not really skinny, but those areas have always been very thin. I believe there is a Muay Thai school near me, but I don't know if I should go while I'm in this condition. Any suggestions on what I should do and I could get into shape for it?

fairly simple suggestion. you dont get in shape before going kickboxing, you get in shape by doing it. just turn up as you are now. running is good for legs and endurence, and if you suck at it a first you do improve quite fast.

17 is a good age. im 17. means youll get in shape fast lol. out of all the guys at my gym, the one id least like to fight with is about 5 foot 3 and lightweight, not sure exactly. he's 40 something as well. it just means youll be damn quick, technique means you can hit hard without loads of muscle. ive got sod all arm muscle and i can punch hard enough when i need to.

just dont give up. push yourself as hard as you can while youre there. if you can only do 4 pushups abd everyone else is doing 40, dont sit on your arse after four. stay down and fight like hell to make it 5, then 6. if you leave bone weary having given it everything youve got they will be glad to have you. turn up, do a little bit, get tired then stand and talk and whatever shape you're in you wont be welcome.

best of luck friend, its a good hobby to have. any specific questions, ask or you can find the answers here somewhere. people who start at my gym are invariably very unfit. people who go week in week out arent.

    peace

Thanks for the reply. Yea, I'd say I'm in pretty good shape from weight lifting (except my legs), but I still have no endurance. Also, what are the classes like? Like what happens in the classes and how would I go about joining? Thanks again!

if youve got muscle then that helps a lot. makes life simpler to start with. legs... run and cycle i suppose. sprinting uphill is about the best i use. my legs arent so good either atm because i broke my bike and got lazy lol.

classes depend on the club. in mine, there's a warm up, which may be a warm up or may be very tiring depending on the instructors mood. we hit the pads for a while, various drills, punches, kicks, elbows, knees. may or may not be some clinch work. aside from that theres sparring, which is unlikely at first. thats you and another boxer wearing gloves, possibly other protective equipment, fighting i suppose but at a fairly low level. focus is far more on technique than killing the other guy. gets you used to a moving target.

finally conditioning... at my club that amounts to them hitting you (as hard as you call it) in stomach, legs etc to get you used to the idea of being hit. but all clubs vary.

long distance running and swimming are good for endurence if you do either reasonably fast. the kickboxing itself does the most for endurence tho imo

BTW, I live in Omaha, NE and this is the school that I finally came across. I can't find much information about it, so if anybody knows anything about it, please let me know. Here it is: http://www.usmta.com/State-Nebraska.htm
