  • street fight (with alcohol in the picture)

Thought I'd share what happened when me and some friends were out partying a few weeks ago...

We were at a place drinking and having great fun. I noticed that a friend from the kickboxing gym (don't know him very well) tended to get into verbal confrontations with guys he bumped into. He had quite a lot to drink, and I wasn't very sober either.
Later we decided to leave the place. We were outside talking and waiting for all of us to gather.
Then I saw my friend was a bit away from us, talking to some guy. I could tell he had gotten into an argument.
I walked over there and asked my friend if he was getting into trouble again. They continued arguing over nothing and appearantly the other dude was doing thaiboxing. My friend had only been training kickboxing for a short while... he was probably in over his head. But still he initiated a fight, trying to headbutt the dude. It was a hit but not a hard one because the dude pulled his head back. The dude was not as drunk as my friend. After that the dude stepped forward, grapped my frinds neck and kneed him in the stomach, but it was probably blocked by his forarms. After that the dude gave him a half hearted left roundhouse that didn't do anything.
I was holding my friends jacket and I had just been watching, probably slow to react because of the alcohol.. but also because I thought my friend must take the consequences of his actions.
So they were both ready to fight now. I didn't have time to see more because at this point someone started to attack me from the side or from the back. Instinctively I got my guard up and rolled my shoulders up and actually used proper footwork to move from my attacker. I felt several blows, one of which hit my shoulder and would have knocked me out if I had not had my cover up.
I yelled that I was not in the fight, and through my guard I could see that my friend and the other dude were trying to punch eachother, and that there were more guys in their gang, and they were around my friend. One second later my friend was knocked out cold on the pavement. My attacker stopped throwing punches, and (dumb as I was) I let my guard down and didn't even look back at my attacker. Instead I walked over to my friend and tried to wake him. The dude and his friends left the scene, but threw a glass bottle that landed on the street one meter from me and my friend that was knocked out.
So that was the end of a great start to a great night out... police came and we took my friend to the hospital. He was alright.. just very drunk, and with a big swelling on his eyebrow. He had probably taken a hit to the jaw (light bruising there).

it's the usual, street fighting is rubbish, and nasty as hell!! scum bag lads always do this. I've had a think about it before and in street fights, theres a focal point. ie your drunken mate and the other guy he head butted. These guys are never the real fight that will occur. The real fight is between any on lookers of innocence like yourself.

I say in street fights look for like, a jackel affect. Guys walking circles with wide eyes around the scene, or people who are not laghing or remorseful standing on the sideline because these are the scum bags that do all the damage, running in with flying kicks, or punches from behind ect ect the list goes on.

But it all boils down to what you did and were able to do. Durabilty is a posh word for saying you take a really good beating without any real worry and then make your move after composure, in my opinion, and the ability to cover up like you did, and take a few, calmly, and then deal with a situation after is a sign of a fighter. Not KO power, not the ability to not get hit, it's the ability to take a few punches.

Nice one, I'm glad your ok, and I think you did the right thing and are probably ahrder than all of the attackers put together. You were concerned for your friend, and brushed the attack off like you would a fly, top stuff, real street if you ask me, survival.

He's lucky he didnt have his eye socket broken or have teeth knocked out. If he wants to fight, do it in 73h r1n6!

Well, I think much of the reason I kept calm was also because of alcohol... I was a bit drunk. But also because I feel kind of safe in my guard I guess.
But I still think I made a tactical error in that I didn't try to turn toward my attacker. I couldn't see him while he threw punches. And when he stopped, I let my guard down, which could be dangerous. He might have decided to punch me then. Another interesting thing i noticed is that I held my guard as if I had gloves on; with closed fists to my forehead. I think an open hand placed on the forehead or top of head gives better stability in this case.

My friend who got knocked out fights with his chin in the air. He did so then and he does so in sparring. He's a beginner that's why. That might have saved him from getting knocked out.
He's a very nice guy otherwise.. he was very surprised when I told him what had happened... that actually he was the one that started the fight. He had never done such a thing before. Alcohol does strange things to people...

Yes. It does. It is not a good spirit.

I drink now and then myself.

But I'm always a bit alarmed at how unfriendly the spirit that rides with alcohol is...

I'll stick to the sacred herb.
