I think an important difference between a soccer kicker and a muay Thai practitioner lies in the cleat worn on the foot, so the soccer player cannot pivot. Nevertheless, there is a biomechanical advantage to kicking like a Thai boxer. I believe this because Efron Herrera, who used to be the place-kicker for the Dallas Cowboys, added 10 yards to his average the first year Master Chai worked with him when he was fitness coach. There is definitely something to be gained by pulling the leg through with the pivot versus forcing the leg through with muscle alone.

I have been doing MT for a while now. I have seen American kickboxers in action but I have not taken American kickboxing.
Overall I believe MT is a better striking art, however American kickboxing does has its advantage over MT. I believe the boxing is better in American kickboxing. This is because the kicks do not have that much power and are not that effective. The punches are used more in American kickboxing.
Do not get me wrong MT punches are sound but just not as powerful in general. The kicking in MT has a lot of power. They are easy to do and man do they hurt. Also in American kickboxing there are no low kicks. The most important thing is the clinch work. Where would I be without those elbows and knees in MT?
This is what I do. I take MT and crosstrain in boxing. I give you this advice as well. Make sure you train in a MMA school or your instructor knows both. Together these to arts make a very good striker. If I had to choose one it would be MT.
