superglue would work. I've superglued knife cuts working in a restaurant...seems to work pretty well...when I got stabbed in the face, the plastic surgeon (I was SO lucky they had one on staff, right then, and I HAD health insurance) superglued it inbetween stitches, and it worked for awhile.

It's supposed to cheer up the fighter.
IF the fighter is convinced his trainer is a master magician by the great feats of "I got your broken septum", and "look what's behind your cauliflour ear", he has greater confidence to go into the next round.
