  • Shifting from Taekwondo to Muay Thai

Hi everyone! I have spent some considerable years with TKD already. I recently tried out Muay Thai and fell in love with it. All the apprehensions and hesitations that I thought TKD should do were all addressed to in Muay Thai.

Because of my many years in TKD, I'd like to ask if there are any converters like me in the board? I need some tips. There are some TKD habits i may need to take off and stuff.

Does Muay Thai also have turning back kicks, turning hook kicks, turning roundhouse kicks and jumping versions of it? Like I said, the habit might come up. I don't see much of these in the matches I have seen. Is it ok if suddenly one of 'em pops up during sparring or a match? Would I suddenly be called out and shouted at "Hey that's not Muay! Stick to it!"

it does have them, you wont do them very often because they dont work.
you will see perhaps the turning back kick occasionally. thai boxing has a side kick as well. most of what you will learn will be variations on the round house and push kick.

dont be fooled into thinking no one knows what a reverse roundhouse is etc, they know what it is, its just been rejected because its generally ineffective. when you get to spar try it out and youll see why. if you are taught them in muay thai its usually to be aware of their existance. in thai boxing the defence idea is that attacks come at angles, if you can read the angle of attack your standard few blocks will work for it, so be it reverse roundhouse or standard round house makes little difference to the person recievng it other than the reverse is slower, more obvious and harder to land.
but good luck with your training, hope you enjoy your time training muay thai. youll probably have alot of fun and get very fit. post any questions you have in this section.

here is an example of why they have been generally rejected, if the other guys isnt playing the tkd game you get this result, generally:
