I'm going to be hoisting some heavy bags in my garage. I don't want to bring the whole thing down on me. I don't suppose anybody has any good guidelines for how much weight/distribution your typical Midwestern garage made of 2x4's can support?

i have no idea what that is mate butttttttttttt, i imagine it has some rows of wood in the room area, if so dont hang it from one, stick a new piece of wood up there that runs across the roofing section that will spread the load.
However it is done, try to spread the load as much as possible.

Why don't you try the heavy duty floor model bag holder. You can get one on sale for about 100 bucks usa money. WWW.dickssportinggoods.com

Go onto Title Boxing.com and order a heavy duty spring and swivel if you do not have one. It will take some of the shock of your punches and kicks. You might do a little triangular reinforcing of some of the joints of the garage if it does not seem really solid.
