  • Hello!

Hey there. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Eric, and I live in Vancouver, WA (just north of Portland, OR) I have been interested in Muay Thai and Kickboxing for some time now. Only a couple weeks ago I made a decision to look for a MT training center. After much research, it seems the only place in the Portland area is Portland Thai Boxing under Jeremy Wijers. Now, during my research, it would appear that Chalambok on these forums is indeed Jeremy himself, am I correct? I was actually going to go in and take the trial class and see what it is all about this week. However, I re-evaluated my time and monetary situations, and I think it would be best if I waited until around August/September to start the classes. Sorry Jeremy!!!

    A little about me:
I have no background in Martial Arts, none. I can apply myself to pretty much any sport though, and become quite adept at it. I really started looking at MA about 6 months ago, after I put my 6 year old son in TKD. He is doing really well at that by the way. I am going to buy a punching/kicking bag to hang in my garage soon, full size though, my son can grow into it, and I can use it without it flying across the garage. I myself am 28 years old, and I work as an Low Voltage electrician, just about wholly in the Portland area.

    So, Muay Thai huh?
Yep, I know I can be quite good at it, I consider myself really quick, precise, and strong for my size (5'9" 165lbs) One reason I came to this forum is to get some Weight Training tips. I figure, if I am going to wait until August/September to start MT classes, I might as well put my 24 Hour Fitness gym membership to better use. From the few hours of reading this forum and elsewhere, it would appear that I need to work on everything, with focus on Squats, Abs, and Punch Power I guess I would call it. I've seen many links on this forum, including MyMuayThai, and the "The Thaiboxing Workout: A Scientific Approach" on the main page (which warrants a second read). Good stuff in both places. I am really after a good weight training regimen that would get me stronger/faster in the next 6 months or so, before taking classes.

I am sure this is a long shot, but does anyone here live in the Vancouver area and have a 24 Hour Fitness membership? Perhaps we could spot each other from time to time?

Anyhow. If you have read this far, thank you. I would love to hear some tips for someone just beginning MT training. If you did not read this far, hehe, I'll pick your brain another day.

Chalambok and Jeremy Wijers are different people. Khru Jeremy's gym is exceptional, but as always, you should go watch a class and meet the man before you make any decisions. I believe Chalambok and Jeremy did train together/ shared a gym (or something like that) for a while, but I don't think that's the case at the moment. Anyway, I do highly recomend Portland Thai Boxing, it's a great place! Say hi to all of them for me!

There is another gym that trains in Muy thai/wester boxing, if you haven't already considered it? In case you haven't here's a link to it's website...
Northwest Fighting Arts - Portland, OR- Home
the head instructor is Jeff Patterson, very skilled and very humble man.
I would recommend meeting both intructors in person to get a feel for each.

I would say that if you want multiple kinds of arts in one place, then Jeff Patterson's is a strong option in the Portland area, but if you're only interested in Muay Thai, you want Jeremy Wijers'. Again, that's just my humble opinion, and sitting in on classes is always a good idea.
