Seriously, unless you're wearing those awesome Chuck Norris stretch jeans, you're better off keeping your boots on the ground. Use your six-gun instead, partner.

Hah! I forgot about the STRETCH JEANS WITH THE DIAMOND INSET IN THE CROTCH FOR KICKING!

    Hah!

God, I almost want a pair now, just to be Martial-Arts-Retro.

I wonder if I can get a nice denim gi-top to go with them! I'd grow out my side burns and wear some of those funky glasses that get darker in bright light.

    That would be..funky.

Your instructor probably won't like that you are using your shin instead of your instep. But you should really learn to throw it that way, anyway.

The shoe on your foot will not increase your range noticably.

If you kick hard with your instep, you can easily break your foot. You may not belive me, but that's because Tae Kwon Do style kicks rarely have that kind of power. But I know at least one guy who broke his instep. It bothers him considerably still.

You shouldn't kick at long range. That's a major flaw in the teachings of TKD strategy. It seems to make sense "When at long range, use your longest tool."

But in real life, kicks work much better if you set them up at closer range, using your hands for the set up.

I hope this was of use to you.
very good points about kicking in long range. not ideal. it does not hold true always that just cos its the longest range weapon that it should be used as such.
in the ring its ok but in the street. i wouldnt kick unless i was in medium/solid boxing range. where you can mix up your kicks and punches very effectively.

My instructor has me practice kicking with my shin, not the instep, I'm not a tkd guy I was wondering if my instructor's way of kicking was the best thing to do if I were wearing a shoe. But I guess kicking with the shin is still the best response (unless I'm throwing a high kick of course) even with shoes on. Thanks for bringing up the point that in self defense, medium range kicks that are guaranteed to hit and hit hard are probably the best

You hit a guy's elbow with an instep TKD-style kick, you'll never want to kick like that again.

Lol, I've done that before without shoes, it hurt! But I'm talking about the event where I'm wearing shoes

I've kicked a guy in the elbow wearing shoes, and trust me it fucking hurts for the whole week.

I have a scar on the lower part of my right shin as well! However, I don't have a matching dent.

If the person does not know how to fight even a soccer kick with some hard shoes will take their leg out.

I do full contact karate and Muay Thai.

The way I see it that in self defense you do not really want to use kicks much. You have more control with fists and in the clinch.

The kicks that are affective are low kicks and thai style is the best for them. Mid or high kicks I would do with shoes.

You can easily shin kick someone out who doesn't know anything. Depending on the shoe it is overall stronger than the shin in my opinion.

If you are wearing sandals I would use shins. If you are wearing tennis or running shoes then I would use the shoe for mid kicks. High kicks are risky but they better with the shoe. If you have steal toe shoes then yeah the shoes.

No shit. I'd still take the shin kick over the foot any day, at least I can condition my shins.

There are some great TKD kicks in that clip, as well as some low thai kicks(@1.27 and 1.39min for example) and several punching combos right out of western boxing.

Excellent aggression from the TKD guy.
