  • mouthguards

I thought about posting this in the BJJ/MMA forum, but I guess it applies here.

I'm trying to determine if the one style of mouthguard is worth it or not. You know, the ones with the hole in the middle that you can breathe through..versus the non-hole kind.

I thought it'd be nice to have a hole to breathe through, but my instructor thinks that you'd have a hard time breathing, and prefers the one-layer kind.

I've been hit in the jaw with my mouth open before, and it ain't fun. If I get tired and my jaw starts to open so I can breathe, that presents some problems.

    Which is better?

The double guard offers more protection, and for light sparring, no one is throwing any knockout chin shots...I'd rather have my mouth slightly open than risk an expensive dental visit or three.

For competition, though, you'd probably want to stick with the traditional style guards so you can regulate your breathing better.

I had my dentist custom make me one, and would highly recommend it.
