Amazon.com: Fighting Strategies of Muay Thai: Secrets of Thailand's Boxing Camps: Mark Van Schuyver, Pedro Solana Villalobos: Books

Can you all suggest this title, or is it like many other MT books in that it tells me a lot of redundant information? I am interested less in technique, more in strategy, timing, training approach etc. etc.

    Thanks
    Jake

I have the book, its good. imo he over analyses types of fighters and how one style goes against another and ironically ends up over simplifying what is going on to the point it becomes like rock paper stone. However, I agree with him as his analysis, in theory, is correct. Imo we need some theory injected into Thai Boxing as there is a tendency to go with what we have seen rather than trying to move the game forwards.

Is it the be all an end all in books for thai boxing? not a chance but it is certainly worth reading.
So i would recommend this book as it provides a more intelligent, thought out look at thai boxing than nearly any other thai boxing book currently in print. But dont take the analysis too literally as no one really slots into the categories fully.
If you have much experience in thai boxing you probably wont get a great deal out of it. Good for a novice fighter to read perhaps.

                id score the book 7/10

                      Hey Jake,

I didnt get much from the book but most books on muay thai for some reason are really deficient in understanding how it works and how to explain it clearly and concisely. I think I own every book regardless of language it is in and none really do it justice. Even panyas red book is a jumble of things. Depending on what you are looking for maybe a dvd or video might better serve your purposes. Are you looking for combos, the clinch,or something specific or just an overall game plan?

                        George,
Thanks. I guess I am looking for a bit of everything. I have been in the martial arts for 17 years so I know how to throw a punch and kick, but the strategy for fighting, the importance of clinch fighting, combo flows etc. etc. IN the advertisement it talks about strategy and what not, so I was wondering how it was different in that respect.
                        Thanks

                          Hi again jake,

I found all the books mostly generic and not detailed in the thai ways of doing things as well as sturdy progressions and how to develop things. But if you are looking for an overview of techs then maybe the red muay thai book by panya kraitus is best, though i found it just a jumble of techs without linking things. The other book by pedro with strategies are again very generic and basic and you probably know or have come in contact with these ideas yourself.
