Muay Thai Shorts...

Hi Everyone,
i just recently started muay thai and i wanted to ask a question about shorts

I wanted to know
A) is there any FUNCTIONAL need for MT style shorts? or are they purely aesthetic??
What should i be looking for when i buy MT Shorts?
C) Which are the popular brands?
D) What's the quality like? are they worth $30-$40?
E) Any paticular fabric better than the others??
F) What brand do you prefer? Why?

A) There is more of a traditional need, as opposed to functional. A lot of schools/camps require you to have MT shows, as a sign of respect and as it is part of the history and culture of Muay Thai. It's also a good way to express yourself. As far as functionality, MT shorts are usually cut shorter than MMA Board shorts, partially because of all the high kicks in MT fights.

B)What you should be looking for depends on what your personal taste is.

C)Raja, Fairtex, Windy, Twins, Siamtops to name a few.

D)The quality is usually always really good on them, especially the ones made in Thailand. I prefer Satin over Nylon. Satin is more comfortable and will not fade as quickly. It will also last longer.

E)See above.

F)I prefer Raja, because they are a little flashy. Fairtex are usually simple, but have a nice look/feel. If you get Windy, get a size bigger than you would in other brands, since they are cut small.

They are wicked, why wouldn't you want to fight in radioactive pink shorts with foreign swirly writing on them? The only problem is you need to wear some cycling shorts or some secure under draws because the ball bag has been known to hang out from time to time.
