  • hands hurting from holding pads

hi guys, i hold pads around 7 hours a day at the moment and my hands hurt like hell, i cant maintain the grip position on the pads much longer i dont think, hands hurt in the morning and all day now. anyone know of a way of modifying the pads perhaps so my hands are stuck to the pads.
or something i can do so i dont have to grip the pads.

i was thinking of cutting the hand grip part off with a hacksaw and somehow strapping my hand to the pad.

    any thoughts would be appreciated

        Ghost,

I know exactly how you feel, and after 30 years of it can only say it gets worse!.

Just now both my wrists and elbows ache and hurt,my shoulders are going that way to,none of my aches are due to my own training but are due to holding pads, especially for big guys.

Only advice I can give you is to strap your forearms and wrists up everytime you take a good hitter on the pads, and be smart get someone in to help you or limit the ammount of pad work you do per day, also put the big punchers on good heavy bags.

As a footnote to this My friend is a massage therapist and is now having to limit how many massages he does per day because of aching hands! so its not just the Hard things we do that can injure.

Take it easy bro, belive me when I say it catches up to you in later life.

thanks mate, it really worries me that later on ill be in a whole load of pain with this, its depressing me slightly as it is, well ive got a few ideas and i think might jsut about ditch thai pads, ive seen some others that look like they may work better.

Twins Deluxe Long Punching Mitts - Thai Boxing Store

there the hand is open, might be better that way, its really just my hands at the moment that seem to take it, if that doesnt work im going to stop holding pads and do technique instead and stick people on the bag for some parts.

            Ghost,

My wrists, elbows and shoulders have taken the hammer more from the Boxing pads than the Thai Pads,if you think about it the wrist is constantly bending when the pad is hit especially if hit incorrectly.the elbow is still so takes some of the shock from the hit and the shoulder well basically you are getting a small Kimura shoulder lock constantly.

The kicking and kneeing dont affect me to much if I have good pads, but the belly pad for teep with the big fellas doesnt do much good so I have had a tremendous ammount of hits through my body,at the moment I havent any effects from this(fingers crossed) but no longer take the big lads on the pads with a belly pad on.

Those twins pads seem like they may help you,Id give them a go for sure, but the best advice is lilit the ammount you do with the pads, vary it on the bags and technique work as you said in your post.

            Good luck bro.
p.s have you seen the size of some of the pad men in Thailand!

Nice post, firecobra. I like your ps about the size of the padmen here in thailand let me add that some of them use the most worn out, ripped up equipment, so they are nothing short of incredible. I bought my trainer some new pads because I was like how are you taking all this daily pounding with those worn out things!

One other point when holding the pads, you have to know how to hold them in a brace position, how to absorb impact and also I find beginners grip the handles way to strongly and dont release, so essentially your grip will only last so long and then start to impact your wrists and forearms. Ease up in between the impacts then grip, release or easy up the grip. No one can grip something endlessly without it giving out and causing residual pain.

Its an art to pad holding, no doubt about it from my point of view, some of these trainers are just extraordinary with their holding and feeding.

                  Thanks George.

The main reason I mentioned the size of the padmen in Thailand was that I have never seen a Big boxer and a small pad man its always the other way around, yet instructors such as myself and Ghost have to take everyone on the pads,I am around the 70gk mark(on a good day) and this morning I took 2 guys on the pads 1 is 120kg the other 110 kgs, thats the norm for me every week.

As Im sure you will agree George the Thais have it right when it comes to how to train a boxer, including using big pad men for the little guys to kick around!.

Good advice on how to hold the pads correctly George, hope people listen.

yeah thats good advice from both of you, im holding the pads correctly i think its just th volume of padwork, there has to be a limit, anyway for now i have changed my teachig style slightly and i think its working, but time will tell. less padwork and a bit more technique. i think i was doing too much padwork in general anyway for a private lesson.
