  • Should I bother with weight training / strength work?

My routine up till now has been boxing session 3 times per week and strength + conditioing 2-3 time per week, since i've had it ingrained into me that wieght training is compulsory

But now I am in a position where I can attend classes 5 times per week, and was thinking of doing maybe an hour per day bag work in the morning? I was thinking all the s+c I would need will be done in sessions and bagwork every morning. So do you think it would be better to ditch the weight training and just concentrate on the muay thai?

tbh I love training muay thai and I just need to know whether all the functional strength I need can be obtained from the muay thai itself?

Ive been lifting weights for a while but want to stop since I think it's effecting my MT recovery and performance.

Skill is 50% and ability is another 50%. You may use skill to defeat opponents at your level but you may use ability to defeat opponents at much higher level. Your may lost your speed, flexibility, and endurance when you get old, but you may still be able to maintain your ability at much older age. IMO, the ability training (such as weight training, heavy bag, ...) will give you the best reward for the time that you invest.

there is no such thing as functional strength.

strength is strength init, application is in technique.

Just stick with pull ups, push ups, sit ups and use any extra time to run as much as you can. A good muay thai fighter needs small fast muscles not big slow ones.

          I agree with Excessive Force.

I did weight training for about ten years. It helped but since changing to kettlebell training over the last few years I have noticed a considerable change in my functional strength over the isolating exercises that conventional weight training offered.

And I've found kettlebell training has crossed over into my MA training much more effectively than normal weight training. But everyone's different.
