Ok, since there is nobody to show me better and it is always about 'getting hard', injuries to avoid etc (where I am not sure what means this etc because I did not hear good reason, just thoughts, did I?) I would like to point your attention to this nice little video here in the forum:

Autsch, I feel for him, by the posts in this thread I had the impression he seems to be nice guy, are you? ;-)

He was not allowed to use shin guards, his 'holder' had to take him hard in the 2nd round (as i understood) in order to see how he handles these kind of situation. I do not want to go into details why I think this test is strange, what shall it express, so I skip this part.
But I guess the tested person could have done better if he would have trained without guards with the intention to study a number of different techniques. By varying the defense techniques the tested person could have avoided to be injured. It is not only about guards, it is more a combination of both (no) shin guards and techniques to vary. Learning how to obtain pain and how to avoid pain enables you to choose and to recognize small differences. Your technique can improve, you can learn more techniques, simply because your shin is not covered.
Why do you think the holder had no/less pain as he kicked? And why do you think he did not stop kicking?
Can you see where we are going?
