In 1972 I was ordered to leave the jungles of Vietnam and take a break. My LT asked me if I wanted to go to Taiwan or Thailand. Well, I had seen China Gate and The King and I so I went to Thailand. Well, to cut a very long but engaging story short, my driver arranged front row tickets at the Thursday afternoon fights at Lumpini Stadium. Back then the fighters would run around through the crowd after the fight and people would shove money into their mouths. Sometimes the loser would make more than the winner, especially if he was much outclassed but hung in. They fights were all awesome, but one in particular I will remember until the day I die. It was a very evenly matched fight until the 4th round, when one fighter got off a perfect elbow shot and cut his opponent across the head just above the eye. He bled like a firehose, and the fight doctor took one look then stopped the fight. The crowd went berserk! People started jumping over the ropes and slugging it out with each other, the referee, the fighters, the doctor. I just sat there agape, amazed, and astounded!! Suddenly the barn doors off to the side opened, a platoon of infantry with fixed bayonets hopped out of the deuce-and-a-half that was backed up to them, and ran into the stadium, surrounding the ring. They then proceeded to poke and push and force the whole crowd out and into the back of the truck, sealed it up, and drove off to who knows where. The doors closed and the fights went on. I have been hooked since that day. The lesson is the whole direction of one's life can turn in 3 or 4 minutes. Or is it? Hell, I don't know. But it sure was awesome.
