  • my shins

i'm not in thai kickboxing but i plan on taking a course in it or bjj. but i was just wondering how would i train my shins. i would think that just hitting it against something hard would do the trick. this might sound kind of stupid but i just want to train my shins.

Kick a heavy bag making contact with your shins. That is the safest way. After a while, block kicks with your shins. I wouldn't recommend using other, more extreme, methods. Those methods can cause more harm than good. Such as deadening the nerves before the bones are actually strengthened, then you block a kick or someone blocks your kick and BAM! You just got a broken leg.

what you said about deadining the nervees in your legs bring up a memory in karate when sensei and a brown belt were talking about that and sensei told him that was the way to go and kill the nerves in your shin. thanks for telling me that i will start training my shins as you told me.

so deading your nerves is bad? ive seen ppl taking glass ridged Coca-Cola bottles and rolling it on there legs for long periods of time. it sure as hell made there shins hard, but i need to tell them that its not worth it.
        thank you very much!

          F*** DAMNIT !!!!!!!!!!

Erm, I took up Muay Thai and I`ve been in my school for about 3 months. DAMN MAN, And i started rolling beer bottles over my shins like, a few weeks back. DAMN is it too late to stop now, damnit but that was my instructor`s advice. I want to listen to him, but sh*it man. I am also concerned about my health to.

Anyways does anyone know the "fastest way" to condition your shins ?

if there is no such thing as " faster way " what gives better results ? (including long-term health issues type of conditioning)

And for me, it seems like kicking the bag 100s of times per day seems HARD ASS Work.

The idea is to ultimately deaden the nerves AND strengthen the shin bones. The problem is deadening them too quickly, before the bones have an opportunity to strengthen. When just kicking the bag, the impact from the kicks causes the bones to strengthen and get denser, and from the repeated impacts the nerves get deadened. When kicking and making shin-to-shin contact, the bones suffer small fractures and it further deadens the nerves. When these small fractures heal, the bone is even stronger. Using other methods, bottle or whatever, also fractures the bone, which also strengthens the bones, but you do not have the advantage of building a more dense bone before damaging the shin bone. The shins will be stronger, quicker, using other means, but not as strong as gradually building bone density first.

But that is just my opinion. And opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and we think everyone else's stinks.

              faster way

So the faster way to condition one's shins is to kick thai pads and the heavy bag for 6 hours a day instead of only 3!

chill out! Rolling a coke bottle over your shins is just fine. Just don't do stuf like kick doorways or trees or power polls. The real damage (and the reason most thai fighters die at age 40) is because of all the hard legshots they take...and those legshots give you such things as blood clots and nerve/vessel damage.

                  My Method

Hello I'm new to the forums, this is my first reply. I'm currently a Thai boxing instructor at my gym. Gary "Big Daddy" Goodridge trains at our gym, as well as many international competitors, so we have a good rep. Anyways, I have bee in Muay Thai for 2 years, and my 2 shins are completely dead. About the nerves, yes you you have to kill the nerves, the more you hit the hardbag, the more you kill them. You can't harden your shins without killing the nerve. We have a bag in our gym that's as hard as cement, but it still softens a bit. You know in Thailaind, they hit banana trees. NOW THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT " DO NOT HIT ANYTHING THAT'S HARDER THEN YOUR BONES", so if your a newbie to Thaiboxing and you want to harden your shins, hit the Thai pads, and if you want to step up hit the hardbag in your gym but do it very lightly, you will see results in a few weeks. Essipish is right, try to hit the hardbag as much as you can, but do it at your skill lvl, if you are high then go at it hard, if you are new go at it lightly. This is also important, I've seen many people concentrating on conditioning there shins so much, that they forget to train and work on there technique. So remember, Technique comes first, then your shins will condition as you progress. Using something like a bat, or a broomstick to roll on your shins is considered a shortcut, but however it's also not safe for some people, I've seen different results on different people. I hope this help.

i when i am conditioning my shins i have fracture the bone, kill the nerves in them. now i have never done this so can you tell me if it is going to be agonizing pain in my legs or what. for some reason fracturing my tibia on purpose doesn't sound that safe to me. but if it works i guess i have to do it.

                      Is this normal ?

snipa151, so i assume you have experience on thai boxing and conditioning. Well, this is what I did, I roll beer bottles over my shins. and now somewhat, i can " flex them" ? :P LoL. When I "flex my shins" I notice a bit of muscles going on the shin, not fully, just about covered ( like 3/4 ). Is this normal ? or is this a sign of improper shin conditioning ? ( I noticed the results in weeks ) and each day I roll them over 10 to 15 mins each leg.

I`m worried about long term health issues, yet I still love this style !

                        ???

I still don't quite understand what you are trying to say. Are you saying that when you flex your shins, as when you point your foot up and the muscles cover your shins. Or they are permenantly like that? cause if that's the condition that is very very bad. When you do a thai kick, the other person will block with his shins, therefore your shins and your muscles will make contact therefore you will receive a lot of muscle pain. When someone notices that you felt pain in that area, they will keep on attacking that area till you give up, and trust me you will give up. Let me know if I helped you in anyway. That's why I said, rolling your shins is good for only certain people, and then others have side effects. The only time I rolled my shins was when I first started, and I got bruises and bumps, I put some liniment on them, and rolled them sideways, so I won't feel pain when I'm hitting with my shins.

Yeah thank you for the advice. i am going to stop with the beer bottle idea now. It`s good too know, but hold up one sec, is it too late to stop now I mean like it is already like that, my shins must be screwed now for conditioning ?
