  • Kicking Fighters

I was at a tournament the other day in Manchester and i was watching a number of fights. One technique used by a lot of people (younger usually) was to do a sort of sliding side kick, repeating the kick so they would be standing on one leg for a while and kicking. The oponent couldnt get in to him, but i thought his oponent was a lot better.

How do you get the kickers leg down without him scoring a point? Can you punch his leg?

Or can you legally foot sweep his back leg?

Ummm...that sounds like a point fighting tournament. Thaiboxing has a different set of rules which is why techniques like what you mentioned would never work. As for whether or not a leg sweep would be legal depends on the style, the organization, and the rank of the fighters in question. To answer your question as to how to deal with something like that, you could parry the kick and deliver a teep to the opponents' midsection.

Best way to counter that... hmmm - best thing that comes to mind is to clear the leg away with one of your arms (like the Kyokushin fighters block/clear kicks away) hopefully spin him or put him off balance then follow up with a kick (using your momentum of your block/clear movement)

Elbow his foot. Again and again and again.

I would probably just grab his leg and start kicking him while I'm holding his leg.

hehehe, somehow i dont think that will be legal, but i like the idea. So block the kick and kick his side? if i spin him wont i be facing his back?

This could also work. Something Im still trying out against people who kick too much (mainly for high-kicks but it can work against those side thrust kicks as well)

As the kick is incoming (in the this example its a left kick) - use your LEFT arm in a downward block... but make sure you KNOCK his shin downwards with your forearm - continuing the motion bring your RIGHT arms around for a hook or straight punch to a target area. There must be a smooth flow to it.

After the punch you can usually follow up with a low-kick to his base leg (right) - get the position right and you can take him leg out from under him. If there's no low-kicks allowed then just do a hard side-kick to his ribs (you should be close enough - this technique can bring you reasonable close to him)

should be fun. If that dont work . . . then run away.

Put your hands behind your back and walk towards him with your chin up, I promise you the fight will end very quickly.

nah, i like my head where it is ta. hehehe. One of those trophies will be mine. Sounds interesting but would a back fist not be better than a hook? Kicks to legs are not allowed, waist up o you get warnings. and then d/q

Spinning-Back blow is my favorite and most effective. Some fighters hardly expect it. And MOST hardly even use it for some odd reason. I went to a national championship tournament and there were almost no spinning-punches being thrown.

Such a dandy move... just dont miss.

But - if you want to link it into that combo you're welcome to try. Tried it a few times but i was too close and ended up striking with my forearm or elbow. Im sure if you can work the spin-punch into it effectively then it will be even deadlier.

Though just think about where his head will be positioned if he throws that kick. He could be leaning back - so his head could be at a lower position. Adjust accordingly.

Been watching some fights on FOX Sports... In those promotions, I saw those kind of kicks that jonbid mentioned executed a lot. I am not good at those kicks, so I had to think of a way to counter it.

I came up with this, I don't know if it will work, somebody correct me; go under his kick and pop up with a upper cut or a hook punch... maybe a hard jab.
