Training for life...
While it is certainly true that the mentality of 'surviving' isn't necessarily the same as 'competing', they are not mutually exclusive - just ask any one of the countless poor children training in 'ring' Muay Thai in Thailand. Moreover...
As Sun Tzu says:
'Knowing the other and knowing oneself,
In one hundred battles no danger.
Not knowing the other and knowing oneself,
One victory for one loss.
Not knowing the other and not knowing oneself,
In every battle certain defeat'.
Who we are in life is reflected in everything we do; If our lives are focused on the 'street', then that is all we will see in everything we do and this is equally applicable for any mentality. The first step in any real Martial Arts training is to assess your current state of affairs and make any necessary changes to obtain a strategic advantage. We must address the enemy within - making every opportunity for victory - before we can truly assess the enemy without. For many this a predominately physical adjustment in the beginning, but it is actually a far deeper process. After all, if we have the wrong focus then we have defeated ourselves.
Train sincerely with an open mind, and train for life - wherever that may be.
