  • Light-Contact help

    Hi guys

    Need some help/advice/tips

I have a light-contact fight on Saturday. Id usually fight either full-contact or thaiboxing but from the gyms competing at this tournament there is no one in my weight class that figths outside of Light-Contact.

So - i have to venture out of my comfort zone of low-kicks and HARD strikes.

Anyone have any good light combos or defensive techniques for a light contact rules fight. I realise Im gonn ahave to rake up points more than actually hurt the guy - so a part of me will be focussed on not getting disqualified for excessive force (the best kind )

Also... Im not familiar in fighting against someone with a complete Light Contact background. I've demoed some light-contact stuff before - but that was with fellow Thaiboxers who really had no real background in it. For all the sparring and fighting Ive done in MT ive never had someone throw spin-kicks or any other flashy moves at me before... I'm sure i can expect this from a Light-Contact opponent. Should be interesting...

Ive seen plenty of MT/Full-Contact fighters try and fail in Light-Contact rules to fighters they couldve taken out in their sleep. I hope to avoid this.

So suggestions anyone? Anything I should be wary of?

    thanks guys.

PS: Do i HAVE to wear a long pants???

    Hi JP
i'd look at some of the semicontact & TKD threads mate.
in my experience i found that people who train semicontact can be VERY FAST hitters so you'll have to watch for this, you can always take the risk if the guy gets cocky & you slip a leg kick in & just take a warning (bet he'll back off a bit then) LOL.....i'll probablly get some sh*t for saying that but what the hell im a thaifighter
    GOOD LUCK MATE

Remember its not semi-contact "point" fighting. Cant stand that stuff... too disruptive with no "flow".

Odd that the light-contact bouts will be fought in a ring rather than a mat (as Ive seen before)

But i agree that they are fast. I watched a lot of light-contact fights at this one WAKO tournament. C-r-a-z-y stuff. One guy was throwing heel kicks like it was going out of fashion. I saw a lot of side kicks. Occassional jump-back-spin-kicks . . . and a lot of other stuff you never see at a MT tournament. Gonna be difficult without low kicks... or knees, elbows or clinching.

Are you allowed to sweep in Light-Contact? My coach has never trained in Light-Contact and says its pointless of me asking any advice from her. Basically she says if i get into the ring to fight Light-contact she ASSUMES i know what I am doing.

Hope someone in this forum can help me out before I approach the TKDs...

btw - is a TKD match based around point-fighting? Or is it continuous light this Light-Contact stuff?

you can scoop the leg in some semi fights but it's down to the organisers & coaches or gouverning body.

at least you'll get a better chance with that axekick (try to video it as it could be invaluable to you later on).

semi contact kickboxing is always in the ring.

these light-fighters know how to deal with axe-kicks and the like... since they end up throwing a lot of that stuff themselves. So I'll use those techniques with some risk in mind... they WILL know how to counter it.

Most of the MT guys i train with... when they see and Axe-kick or anything fancy coming their way they just kinda gaze at it in awe before it hits them

no seriously. Its easy to get away with stuff like that with the MT guys i train with. I wont get away with it this time i bet.

But i reckon if im being made a fool of in this match im just gonna KO the guy and get let myself Disqualified. If the guy complains he can take it up with me another time in MT rules.

PS: yes, retired I will get you a video of me doing the axe-kick... and whatever happens to me immediately afterwards (im guessing an X-block followed by my legs getting swept from under me)

that sounds like the K-1 World GP in Vegas last year.

That Black guy was Dutchman Ernesto Hoost... Mr Perfect. Probably one of the best modern heavyweight kickboxers. He was fighting Jan "The Giant" Nortjie. I was at the same gym as Jan (and many of the other SAfrican K-1 fighters).

Jan is a good boxer but he is too slow for a fast nad hard low-kicker like Ernesto. Hacked him down.

other fight was between Dutchman Remy Bonjasky and Croatian Stefan Leko (my icon). Remy (the black guy) is a talented fighter thats good with his knees but Stefan is just a killer with too much experience. I love Stefan's style... he throws spinning punches, heel kicks and jumping knees as well (knocked Remy down with on in that fight)

Two other SAfricans fought that same night - with bad results. Andrew Thomson getting KOed by Dutchman Errol Parris in R1 and Mike Bernardo (whom i know personally) who lost to Gary Goodridge (ref stopped the fight for a stupid reason)

              K-1 is good.

                    No other help?

Ah well, Retired... I guess Im gonna go in there with my Hail Mary Axe-Kicks and a very watered down punching attack.

One day to train. Wish me luck.

Nah, If your talking about what I think your talking about it was Ray Sefo vs some Black fella from the UK (forget his name).

The UK bloke was flashy as fuk, and really very good with it, I won't tell you what happens.

Bob Sapp fights some Russian fella as well, bloody hilarious when the overgrown hippo tosspot gets floored with a right cross, great stuff.

Was the UK guy Pele somebody? He was quite flashy with his high kicks, but then got put in his place!

Ernesto Hoost vs Jefferson "Tank" Silva (NOT a South African guy). The reason I thought it was the Vegas GP was because Retired said he fought some 'tubby' SAfrican... last South African (who was tubby) was Jan Nortjie... ah well

Remy Bonjasky vs Bjorn Bregy (Remy did use some jump knees towards the end... dunno he uses em everywhere)

Ray Sefo vs Pele Reid (more flashy than anything else... hate that skirt he was wearing)

And Bob Sapp vs Mirko "CroCop" Filipovic (croatian guy). Some people at Sherdog go overboard for this Mirko guy... he's good but their fanaticism is annoying.

                            good show

Any more K-1 fans in this forum? Id rather talk about K-1 here than at Sherdog. Too many smart-asses there with mostly nothing but attitude to contribute.

Oy Retired! You've hijacked my HIGHLY CRUCIAL thread by starting with this K-1 stuff.

                              Shame on you, mate!
