I visited a different gym the other day, just to see what its like. The instructor/owner was pretty down to earth and serious about training. The place was in a medium sized warehouse and had 2 (i'm guessing) 20' x 20' rings, some space for about 3 heavy bags, 2 bannana bags, a couple of jump ropes and olympic sized barbells w/ a squat rack.
I was focusing on two sets of thaiboxers and one set of pankration fighters. The thaiboxers were pretty good; Boxing was so-so, but their rear roundhouse kicks had serious power. Could tell this was their coaches favorite technique. There was a gal who threw mega rear roundhouse kicks (strongest I have seen any women throw). Her partner was probably a lt weight and kept flying across the ring...lol. They like to corner their opponents around and near the ropes, keep the pressure on them with basic boxing combos and go for ko roundhouse kicks.
The pankration guys slammed each other into the mats! And then proceeded to palm strike each other from the mount. You could hear the smack when one of the 180 lb fighters crashed! A lot of emphasis on power, control and they drove the guy to the corner (like the thaiboxers, except on the ground) and then worked the submissions combined with palm strikes to the forehead, jaw and rib cage.
It was good to check out other fighters and meet other guys in the sport. They were sportsman like and sweated as much as any other. I look forward to seeing them in tournaments and maybe in the ring (but not the pankration guys!)
