  • Paul V. Says run the **** away

not exactly in those words, I think he says run hide or fly, but still, check out this video and his thoughts on defending against a knife attack.

I'm interested in hearing your self defense take on it, and I'd also like any opinions from a Kali or any FMA practicioners background as I'm becoming more and more interested in the FMA's by the minute.

Edit; the bongos in the background also made me laugh.

That's vintage Vu! From 20 or 25 years ago maybe.

Training to music is a great way to develop rhythm and broken rhythm, half-beats, and so on. That's what the congas are for.

        New Article

Vunak recently wrote an article for Inside Kung-fu about knife work with grappling.

I got a ton of respect for Vunak...he's one of the best around. However, I do not agree with his theories on knife work for the following reasons.

First, I do not buy the whole "defang the snake" as the end all, be all of a knife attack. The defang the snake method is best used for machetes and short swords which have the mass and weight to take off a hand or limb upon impact. Knives simply do not have the same mass and power that a sword does. There are many examples of people who have been stabbed several times and have not stopped attacking. The effects of adrenaline on the body are incredible...many people don't even know if they've been shot/stabbed/slashed during an encounter. Think about it: if someone is trying to kill/rape/kidnap you, your child, or your wife...and the attacker simply cut your arm...would you stop fighting automatically? Of course not. So, why would you assume that your attacker isn't as committed to his attack as well? Many times, those who survived knife attacks have scars all over their hands and arms...and many of them still continued to fight even after getting cut on their arms and hands. Slashes and even stabs to the hands are what are known as "defensive wounds"...and with proper stitches and care, will not be life-threatening.

There is an assumption in his teachings that you will already see the knife coming at you and that you will be dueling with your attacker. This is simply rare and untrue...and even in the unlikely event that you are dueling with your attacker (which you shouldn't be doing, you might as well get the hell out of there when you can), the slash to the hand will do little harm to the attacker. While attacking the limbs is important in a fight, 9 times out of 10, the small surface area of the edge of the knife (assuming its a legally sized folder knife of some sort) will not affect the adrenalized attacker's knife hand or arm when used to slash. Keep in mind that most parts of the West have 4 seasons, one of the longest being winter. Slashes through heavy coats and jackets will do little harm to an attacker who is hell bent on trying to kill you. If anything, it will just make them mad. Cutting the tendons of the hand and wrist is very difficult to do. When using the knife, it is much better to attack vital areas (heart, arteries, etc.) which end the fight much, much faster.

However, Vunak does have it right when he says the best defense against the knife is to run, fly, or hide. Knife attacks are very ugly, messy things. Even a slash to the arm, while not fight stoppers as Vunak claims, are pretty nasty and aren't something you want to go through. I believe that Vunak is one of the best out there...I hope to train with him someday.

I think the whole timetable and complete reliance on the person going into shock is a bit off*...but otherwise it's the best advice and stuff on the topic I've seen in a long time.

*What about the people like that climber dude down in Moab who took his arm off with a pocketknife to try and get out from under a boulder....he didn't immediatly pass out, and he must've been sawing away at his arm for a pretty good amount of time.

              teh 3 rules:

              run hide or fly

Well only 2 of em apply 2 me cos I cant fly.

wots teh deal wiv dem drums at teh back? he got sum bangin drum n base goin there.

very impressed. I fink paul vulnaks would be able 2 beat wanderleiis silva in a fight after watchin dat video. even if silva had a knife vulnaks would jus fly away.

They interviewed Frank Shamrock about the real world fights he's been in, and he was saying he got into it with this one guy who cut to the front of the line at Home depot I think, well they started fighting in the parking lot and Frank got his licks in, punched the dude in the face a few times, and then the guy reached down and took out a big ass knife, Frank said he took the fawk off running back into the store...

                          Okay I found it:
                          Q
Tell us about the other incident?

                          Frank
The second one was a Home Depot in LA, I was standing in line and a guy just cuts in a head of me and puts his stuff on the counter, and I said, hey dude, the line’s back there, and he said yeah whatever, and he just stayed there. Anyway, I tried talking to him a few more times and he just told me to **** off. Anyway, I apologized to the people around me, I just had one item, he goes out, I follow him out to his car, I didn’t want any trouble but I just wanted him to get it, so I tell him that his actions weren’t very nice, he said, look man, I told you to **** off, get out of here, (he made a move) I defended myself with a front kick to the stomach, he bent over, then I kneed him in the face, he lifted his head up and I got him with my right hand, and his face just exploded. So he falls on the ground, reaches into his back pocket then pulls out this huge knife, and he’s just about to throw it at me, and like any good fighter, I RAN…I just ran around, back into the store, and ran out the back door and drove home.

                          Q
                          That’s crazy.

                          Frank
Really crazy — I know, when I walk around on the street, I can kick everybody’s ass that I see, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to do it. I would never cut in front of anyone in a line. And if I did, I would expect someone to make me feel like a total asshole, and I’d apologize.
