I wonder if this is a piece of deliberate disinformation on the part of the author - for a proper RNC, the bone just above the wrist should be pressed into the side of the neck, not the front.

I think the presented way would work perfectly well if the assailant was mean about it and the victim was one (a victim, I mean).

The article was written a hundred years ago on the East Coast if I were to guess, so the technique may have been invented in the gutter and not refined much beyond what 'this works on a mark'.

The police are told not to use RNC/ "the sleeper"... its the RNC... because in high adrenalin situations, with struggling crackhead type assailaints the risk of doing the RNC with the forearm across the throat (which doesnt choke, just crushes the windpipe), is too great, if they crush the persons windpipe they die and that doesnt look good, but if they let them go they could get in some serious shit.

Most cops are unaware of how to do it properly (cutting off the corrotod arteries) or are unable to do it in a high stress situation, so they are told genreally not to use it unless its life or death situation and subdue them some otherway.
