Particularly, I see your point regarding the difference between aggressive/pre-emptive action vs. my reactionary mindset.
My only concern with the aggressive strike first policy is legal ramifications. I know there's a BIG difference on self-defense policies throughout the various states...and NY happens to be pretty strict. However, your use of a non-lethal tool(OC spray) seems to be an intelligent way to maintain distance...even if you misread the threat, no real harm done.
At the same time, I see the advantages of an aggressive policy. Probably the LAST thing somebody sizing you up for an attack is expecting is for YOU to attack HIM FIRST.
I would be interested to see if there's a psychological study on whether criminals have the same problem victims do when attacked...freezing up.
