Being around the New York City living in the Bronx and going through other bad areas everyone trains everyday. Not only for the girls but to give the other person second thoughts to not start, mess, or mug them.

Every once in a while you'll see someone doing pull ups on the corner on walk/don'twalk signs, on the upper hand rails in the train, or chidren's playgrounds, push ups anywhere and bench at home. Now, do you still want to train knowing others are doing this all around you? While others can play ball all day not winded at all and carry razor blades in their mouth?

I've seen fights go from one hit wonders to an hour with a couple rounds in between cause people don't want to back down. Of my 29 years I can probably say one on one's were probably about 20 percent of the total. The rest are multiple attackers or one on one's that turned into jumps.

Element of surprise and dirty tricks can solve your problem of being under trained.

All in all don't fight, cause you don't know who has a weapon. I had a friend have a gun pulled on him trying to tell a kid to get off the full court. And the kid was 11. You just never know who it is or where it comes from.

So I guess what I''m trying to say is have awareness and street smarts first and foremost and know what's out there.

Rckstdy> I'm glad I don't live in that environment and am grateful for it. I like what you said about having street smarts. Reading your environment is important and that includes peoples body language. Just last night on my way to training I could tell something was about to happen across the street from me. Some young punk was wielding a small hammer, not concealing it very well, while trying to look puffed up an tough and waiting for someone down the road to approach him. Don't know what it was all about though as I drove to training. Didn't hear about anyone getting attacked in my neighbourhood last night so it was probably all hot air.

          Thanks for the comment WildWest.

The great thing about New York is that trouble can come at anytime no matter where you are. Most places I've been in the country you can avoid certain areas as you would in New York but then in the nicer areas you still have to be on guard at all times, where you walk, travel or drive. New York is a true melting pot of not only cultures, but economics and crazies.

I do have to say New York is alot better than back in the day but it's still out there right down the block.

WildWest- It's kind of cool when you train you automatically train your awareness right? One thing I don't train often but should which a friend taught me was to think of how to take out every single person you come in contact with in your head. Then it just becomes second nature after a while so you don't get blind sided, then after that you can concentrate on smelling the roses and enjoy life. I think that's the biggest reason why anyone trains, for confidence so we can be ourselves to smell the roses.

One time, my friend was at arcade, and den some dude was talking shit to him. and later when my friend was about to leave 3 people jumped him. Yeah, most fights are ambushes.

I'm new here so forgive the tardiness.

Having spent a good bit of my younger years working as a doorman in the New Orleans French Quarter at various bars and clubs, and having worked a few hundred concert security gigs, I will say it like this.
If a fight goes longer than a 30 secs you usually aren't doing the job very well.
As I say this keep a few things in mind about most of the fights I have seen.
                      1. Most concert security gigs I worked banned security personnel from punching or any type of strike to a head or face, (a lot of clubs were this way too.) so you beter be good with grappling, hidden elbows and low kicks
                      2. The objective is not usually to beat the pulp out of a guy but stop him from hurting someone or himself and get him out of the area. That usually means 2 fights (A) stopping him (B) getting him out
                      3. You usually have a crowd and/or friends of your opponent around.
                      4. Most people you will fight on the street (bar, concert, etc) are not trained fighters

I have 2 teenage sons and a teenage daughter who I have taught to defend themselves and I put it like this when telling them about fighting.
"If you have to resort to a violent/aggressive act to protect yourself , it should NEVER escalate to a fight. Finish it in 2 or 3 moves and call it a whoopin'."

Last year on the bus my oldest boy took it to heart. He was a Freshman. A senior football player proceeded to beat on one of the smaller freshman. My son came in from the side, put a foot into the side of footbal hero's knee, locked an arm and brought big boy to the ground and made him promise not to pick on little guys. My other son claimed it took about 5 secs.
I am pretty sure it may have taken a few seconds longer had football hero been facing down my boy instead of standing sideways to him, but I am also positive the end result would have been the same.

anywhere from a few seconds to 5 minutes. Usually after the first 30 seconds or so its somebody getting chased around, or getting beat to a pulp.

Hahaha, I can see an hour though, if you got two fat guys going at it and after they punch eachother they have to rest because they gassed.

Hi. I was a bouncer too Mike,

When they are several attackers, you don't want to stay more than one or two seconds with one guy, because you need to take 'care' of everyone. You. your team mates, and those attackers.

When this happen, it is not a fight anymore, it is a survival state. The survival state can last very long, running all other the town, dealing with all those guys on the road, between you and your city...

It depends if you count the survival in the fight, or not.

It can be anywhere from a few seconds to hours (with the survival)

Or just normal fight, it's about less than one minutes to less than 2 or 3 minutes (again, it depend of a lot of parameters.)

fights last as long as their repercussions last.
