Look up Floro Villabrille...they had "deathmatches" in the phillippines ending just after WW2...and I'm sure there are live knife fights somewhere in Vegas, but I don't know the details.

Yeah I would agree with you without even looking up the info you supplied simply beause I have been around the world and am simply not naiive enough to think that they wouldn't happen. This was one explanation of the Myths and Misconceptions I had trouble believing.
Interesting article. I'm sure underground matches still go on today. The guys at my Hapkido club were saying that, before I joined, they had a filipino guy training there who used to fight in underground fights and underground weapons matches. Not to the death though, or at least if they were he didn't say so. They said he was very strong and had awesome technique.
Underground competitions do occur, and why this guy wants to put it in the myth category is beyond me.
The only thing I can figure is he means strictly those under-ground events by the Masters like in Bloodsport or other such movies.
There are probably few "to the death" tournaments, but I wouldn't rule them out. But they don't really make sense. If you knock the guy out, there isn't much killing him will prove differently.
If you go outside of organized/sanctioned martial arts you will definately find very dangerous competitions. They may or may not be designed to be to the death, but people die. The reason you can rarely find statistics is it is very hard to determine whether a dead body in an alley was from a chance fight or something set up to be a competition.
You can find some information in police reports in major cities about illegal fighting competitions being busted, or broken up.
Now using that to say they do exist, the question is do we find trained martial artist participating in these activities.
From a personal perspective -- yes. I know "tough guys" that after learning an art returned to their old habits.
Likewise I am sure there are martial artist who hear about these events or who are challenged to go to events, and have an ego/pride moment and can't resist the opportunity to test themselves.
As for the taking on a crowd, what is he saying. I do it every night for fun, sometimes twice.
