At the first club slash restaurant I worked, we had a triple threat of three hundred plus pound bouncers. Well, actually one of them was more like 270. Early one night, I was working as a waiter (initially), when the bartender sent a female waitress rushing in to the restaurant section get me to help out. The reason our bartender called for me was due to a couple things. One, our bouncers had not gotten there yet. And two, an altercation some of our staff had heard about involving myself and another guy at a club on the other end of town, a few weeks prior to this. I rarely fight but this prior situation at the other club was absolutely unavoidable. I was attacked from behind. So I moved quickly over to our bar section to see our dj and bartender talking a guy down. Then our owner shows up for direction, when the guy inexplicably starts to take a swing at my boss. So I caught his right shoulder at the start of his swing and managed to seat him quickly. While I lightly cross choked him with my left arm to let him know I was still there, locking on to his shirt collar. Later that evening my boss asks me to work security with the three hundred pound triplets. At the time I went about 200 to 210 (6'2) and was definitely out of place among those giants.

Our "killer" three hundred pounder (6'6), who had done prison time for murder, liked the site of blood, you know the type. Our killer tells me to basically be the last one in altercations due to the fact that my size would incur more people "trying me". Works for me as I consider myself ever the diplomat. Besides, our killer was a scary guy anyway so I was not gonna question him. We used to send the new guys over to the bar with a small bowl of blue cheese crumbles to our killer as a joke. Our killer would always reply to the new guy, "you know this (blue cheese) constitutes a sexual offering" and give his most serious look. Several new guys never showed up to work the next day after this, so we had to stop doing it.

This club I am speaking on held about 350 people and had an early night dj to spin records til 10pm. When the live bands would perform. So my start in security or bouncing was simply one of happenstance. In the end, bigger bouncers ultimately get tried less often in most cases. Which is why I suspect most clubs go for the big guys. They tend to command more respect based on appearance. This is obviously not to say just any big man could do it. There must be an attitude, ability and reaction combination somewhere in there.

Ah but what if that judoka is one of those Scandanavian folks who pronounces the 'j' like a 'y' - then its yubayee.
