[" And although we may do our best to avoid trouble, sometimes trouble insists on finding us. When that happens......when the time for talk is over, warriors act. They flip the switch and act decisively - ruthlessly if necessary - to preserve and defend the things that they hold dear."

$$$
that right there is why people try to invent their own styles.
i knew a martial artist who opened his own mcdojo and str8 up invented his own art which was nothing more than mcdojo tkd mixed with some bjj lessons he took. this guy tried to pass his art off as some obscure street fighting system from the middle east lol. i know this because this guy trained came to our gym to learn those bjj basics, and he left after a few months.
in fact, heres an article on the guys school....

Stick (cane) fighting techniques have been around for centuries.
There is nothing NEW about it but a name...
TANJOJUTSU (SUTTEKI JUTSU) by any other name is still a (walking) stick style.

Eh, no big deal...

It is a non issue. It means nothing to me. If he wants to be the grand master of his own style... so, what?
He bleeds and breaths like all the rest (of us).

If I create my own style and award myself, lets say 3rd Dan and then promote myself every 4 or 5 years until I reach 10th--Am I a fraud? Or should I just start out with a high Dan? Enquiring minds wanna know.

To be the (10th degree or "grand master" ) Judan you need only spread your style around the world...
Go for it buddy. I might even come out of retirement to pay you a friendly visit!

I'm hoping that some of that magic will rub off on me!!!!

hello,
"grandmaster" is a word associated with asian styles. it is cultural. it usually did not mean "creator of style", or even "best fighter in style".
in old china (and to a point modern china), associations were everywhere. even martial arts schools were considered community organizations. not only did they train in thier system, they did public service or community programs (to one degree or another). a grandmaster usually headed such an organization.
this as inevitably the eldest member of the association, due to the "respect for the venerable elder" concept. they tended to direct the activities of the organization in the community they served. they had little if anything to do with the running of the schools themselves.
other cultures who looked upon china and saw "grandmasters" misunderstood the usage of the word and sought to emulate this "exalted" position, probably interpreting it as "supreme final word in this system".
it is a shame that nowadays, we have so many grandmasters, yet so few who choose to serve thier communities.
thanks.
