  • How effective is a pepper spray ?

I am curious in the USA how effective have pepper sprays been in reality when it comes to immobilising an attacker ?. In my humble opinion just drawing one of these weapons is an effort in itself (especially if your ambushed). If you have the wind against you the pepper spray is likely to hit you in the eyes. Have pepper sprays worked for women ?

Well i used it before. So all i can say it hurts like shit, (done it on my self) and if u arent exposed to it like cops training it on them self, then you will soon be on ground ,or just cry and fell the burning. There are realy alot of diffrent pepers sprays around made on other substances and diffrent molecules. So that makes the diffrence, you wont knock the guy out, but if you still wish to beat him up, he wont give much resistance.

And i still dong get it,peper spray illegal in UK, well i seen those holies carrying around small baseball bats around, why dont u do the same mate. Or take a sizors, or take a small heavy stick (maybe metal). Whos gona say you have it for fighting?

And yes peper spray worked for women, if wind blows well it depends if ur in the wind that can move around paper bages like feather then yes, other wise dont worry about the wind.

    well cya

Only experienced it once. Took about 20 seconds to kick in, then I spent an hour with my head in a sink trying to stop it burning. It certainly hurts.

How well does pepper spray work?

Not as well as plunging your fingers in somones eye sockets while simultaniously kicking them in the groin. Maybe follow with a headbutt?

Pepper spray is extremely effective. Pepper spray effects last a lot longer as compared to other self defense weapons. For instance.. the taser will litterally knock someone to the ground instantly. But as soon as they are no longer being tased, they can get right up. Pepper spray on the other hand, immobilizes an attacker. They cant see you, hard to breathe, totally disorients them.

Heres some more info on Pepper Spray

And here is what is currently the most potent pepper spray on the market. Wildfire Pepper Spray

          Hope this helps

Pepper spray isn't all that. I have been peppersprayed. There is small percentage of people that pepperspray doesn't work against. It takes a few moments to kick in and all it does is irritate your opponent. It doesn't immobilize, incapacitate, or remove from the fight. If you're close enough when you deploy it you might still have to engage inCQC with your assailant. At that distance you will more than likely be exposed yourself. Unless you already have help coming you're going to have to probably fight an angry assailant and the effects of the pepperspray on you.

Pepperspray comes in a couple varieties: a spray (like a mist), and stream, a bit thicker (which definitely limits self-exposure in windy conditions, but does not eliminate the chance). Some are alcohol based, some not. If it's alcohol based you have to be careful of deploying a taser, if you have one (or on the chance the police arrive and the subject is still combative). Alcohol based pepper sprays can catch on fire from a taser discharge.

I don't think this thread is a pro vs con of taser and pepperspray. As was stated earlier a taser completely immobilizes a person. It doesn't rely on pain compliance or soft-tissue irritant. Civilian tasers give a ten-second discharge (and I am refering to Taser brand tasers. I'm not talking about stun-guns.) Civilian Tazers can be deployed for a 30 sec run. Which is to give the defender time to get to safety and contact police.

But even Tazers have their quirks.

I'm not advocating either one. I personally will not use pepperspray, except maybe on a rabid, vicious attacking dog.

There are, however, a few good factors you, personally, will have to consider in the deployment of pepperspray. Distance, wind, your actions post-deployment.

For those that have been exposed. You probably weren't under combat-induced stress, or a drug-influenced mental state. The bite most people feel from pepperspray is from a controlled environment. Sadly, you can pepperspray a derranged assailant and the reaction might be similar to being shot with a supersoaker: annoyance. You then have to ask yourself, then what? The assailant will at some point feel the effects. But until then you will have to deal with someone covered in a skin/soft-tissue irritant. If you have to go hands on you might not be able to open your eyes either or breathe well.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

this thread pretty much backs everything i've heard - for some it works, for others it doesn't. maybe it's in part a brand thing.

                Fox Labs Foam Pepper Spray
This Fox Labs pepper spray foam comes out like shaving cream and adheres to the face of your target. It sticks there and burns like crazy. It will block their view if wearing glasses or goggles, making them remove them thereby exposing their eyes.

Your aim with Fox Labs Foam pepper Spray has to be a little better than using the fog, but it really stays put and is less likely to blow back on you in windy conditions. It is also less likely to cause cross-contamination indoors due to its focused output.

I'm definitely against Tasers because police tend to over use them. This is a real problem. I'm also against them because they are sold as "non lethal" and people actually die from them sometimes. THAT is fraud, or mis-use - one or the other.

Pepper sprays are great if you use them like you'd use your Jab. Don't just use the pepper spray and stand there - use it as the lead to a long combination of punches, knees, kicks and elbows.

Spray him, grab him by the head, and kick/knee/throw him to the ground. Either take him out from there, or run... more likely "run" is going to be the better choice 99 percent of the time (the legal choice, anyway.)

                  --

Some guys at SBG told me about doing some testing with pepper sprays - the people doing the testing sprayed each other.

What is generally found when people do this is

                  1) Pepper spray works great against an opponent who has no "second plan of attack." Especially if you follow up the spray with knees, kicks, and elbows.

                  2) Pepper spray does not work so great against an opponent who has a second plan of attack.

What they found is that if your assailant is accosting you, and you spray him, he's surprised by it - that can work great.

But if you assailant has planned for the possibility of pepper spray, and is ready to double leg you if you spray him, then it doesn't work as well.

However, so long as you hit him, it's a great first attack. At least as good as a boxing glove thumb in the eye.

                  --

Keep in mind: A mugger doesn't have to be a genius to have a second plan of attack or an "if he sprays me, I'll.." plan of attack. I don't really hang out with muggers and rapists, but I'm pretty sure they have figured out that they are going to see some pepper spray, and should be very ready for it.

That does sound like it would resist the old "blow back in your face cause of wind" problem. Foam huh? Maybe I should get some for my girls purse...

The fact that it sticks is really great. Even if you miss his EYES you can still rub it into his eyeballs in the struggle. It will be stuck to his face, and just like using your MMA glove to rub blood in your opponent's eyeball (from his cut brow when you're on the ground) but this stuff will be a lot worse than salty blood. While trying to rub it in his eye, you may as well gouge a little too, I suppose. Poke! Poke! Poke - Pop!

I can even see using the can of spray as a weapon. I imagine it sucks to be blinded, and then beat madly with a steel can's bottom edge. It seems it would suck (being steel) but also cut the living bejesus out of you since the bottomn edge would be "sharp" - and with NUCLEAR ACID FROM HELL PEPPER FOAM ALL OVER YOUR FACE, those cuts would really, really, sting.

I'm curious as to see if anyone has actually used it in food like Homer on the Simpsons. I personally see it as a inhumane weapon and lucky its not really used by cops in my country. I know the stuff works to a certain extent..except against a few guys you can see on youtube. I personally want to see cops use a net or something (man catcher LOL) in a similar manner....

I have come in contact with pepper spray multiple times, each time never been sprayed with it. The first time was in grade school, I approached an enemy of mine and got him scared, by the time I was close to him he drew a small pepper spray bottle and I thought he was reaching for a knife or somthing (so did my friends who witnessed him reaching in his jacket) Before he could use it I smacked it out of his hands and then what? The coward ran from school and went to suck his mommies nipples. I got in shit for "starting it", but he got in more shit for bringing a weapon to school.

Pepperspray in my opinion is useless, I thought about how the situation would of went if he did spray me. And I wished it had.

Knowing he was infront of me, totally pissed off would of charged him, tackled him and started beating his face in using the pain in my eyes as a weapon.

if someone has flipped and are attacking you peperspray might aswell be water. i have been blown up in an accident and the addrenalin allowed me to think straight and act appropriately regardless of my toasted condition. if adrenalin makes you able to deal with actually blowing off your face then pepperspray aint worth a toss.

a stun gun however is something i would love to carry in the u.k. one of these will knock your attacker on the groundfor ten seconds yer. thats long enough for me to stand above him and stamp onhis head untill he stops moving. then i would consider calling the police. sod calling them in the ten seconds of charge you have lol

I like the TASER more than pepperspray. I don't see how this is a REAL problem. How are Police OVERUSING tasers? As opposed to what? Shooting the assailant? Pepperspray sucks. Plain and simple. For both the user and the used upon.

No one has died from the Taser itself. It's usually a combination of other things. Just go to Taser's webpage for details. Anybody telling you anything else is mis-information.

Now, I'm not saying the taser is the end all. I've seen my share of deployments that just didn't work for some reason or another, the most common being a bad connection, or only one probe contact.

The taser is the last thing on my mind when someone wants to go hands on. It's just not reflex. I know of others that are quick draw mcgraw on that thing. Just not my thing. But way better than pepperspray.

Let's just put it this way: i have two rules:

1). No one uses pepperspray around me. PERIOD.

2). No one uses the taser if I'm already hands on. No if, ands, or buts. If I take a taser ride while fighting someone, you'll be spitting out teeth.

Other than that the best use for pepperspray is on dogs. taser works well too, but it's such a small target area to aim for.

                            p.s.
                            "DON'T TASE ME BRO!"

LOL I'm reminded of the video on COPS where the TASER hit a fellow cop instead of the perp.

                              D'oh!

                              That would suck.
