  • So my son gets in his first "fight"

This bully likes to hit or kick people for no reason. Sixth grader. Walks up to my boy and says, "Hey I want to tell you something, come here". He tries to kick him in the jewels, kicks his leg, my son steps back and instinctively kicks his chin. The kid walks away muttering "I think my mouth is bleeding".

Could I have been wrong about self defense training?

Am I wrong for being proud of my boy?

Your son must have really long legs if the guy went to kick him in the nuts and your son hit his chin first.

Sounds more like trading kicks to me. Where did he learn to kick?

He was kicked first, stepped back, and kicked him on the chin. Maybe you misunderstood. I don't know if he targeted the face or if was by chance, but we usually keep kicks about waist level level or lower. Kids...

            part of growing up:

Confidence for your boy. Humility for the bully.

You are wrong for trying to boast vicariously through your son here. STFU and go train.

I think whether your sons actions is a good or bad thing really depends on who's 'side' you on.

As for being proud - it's natural for a father to be proud of his son - nothing to be concerned about - I'd be proud, even if morally I thought it was wrong. He was being bullied, so he stuck up for himself - sh*t happens, life goes on.
