  • MA - Not feminine?

I got a laugh out of it, but it really is a sad statement:

A friend of mine is reliving her youth (she had a crappy one and is making up for it now) she entered a Senior Citizen Pageant with TKD as he tallent (the other four ladies sang off key or told jokes...) and she was asked to wear *something really feminine* for the rest of the show....I mean, she is not a dainty little woman, but she isn't *Butch* by any means!

Is that the common consensus in the public, we are some sort of freak for doing Martial Arts?

most people are out of shape, sad, weak, and insecure as hell. so when they see people with even a shred of confidence they will be intimidated. just dont be one of them and let them intimidate you for being who you are and doing what you like.

Not to worry, I never cared much for other's oppinion. I am having way too much fun and the people I met at the Dojang are just fantastic! The kind of openminded folks I love to associate with.

No, I was more wondering if other women got this kind of junk, or is it a *suthurn thang*?

I live in Atlanta now ( and New Orleans before that) so I don't think it's a southern thing. It may have something to do with it being a senior citizens' function. Mostly I think there are just some people out there that have a bizarre attitude towards martial arts in general. I wouldn't let it get you down; no matter what you do in life there's someone out there that will try to belittle you for it.

I just wondered...Leila Ali (forgive me if I butchered her name!) is probably not greeted with any BS of that sort

I am not letting it get to me, but I also noticed, when you tell women to come and try, you get a *NO* as if you offered them turd or something!

We's gots a long way to go I guess!

To be honest I think when you hear someone expressing that attitude I think it says a lot more about the individual's insecurity and ignorance than it does society at large. There are certainly many talented martial artists that also happen to be beautiful women... like Keira Gracie:

              Yep!

I looked around, and honest to goodness, all of our adult students (the women!) are quiet feminine. Not hot babes but you know...

It's funny, really. (BTW, my friend won. She looked quiet the Queen in her gown, sash and tiara...to bad, I crashe my photo carriing computer!)

Sorry, I misspelled her name, it should have been Kyra. Wikipedia isn't always a 100% accurate but this should help:
