hmm, as for this 'self defence is not a solution' - I think I already said that it's rather a grey area - can you afford to be so certain of yourselves? I'm not. I offer it as a possible solution that would work in some cases. I HAVE taught dozens of girls and that in the east (you know what the culture is like there, totally male-dominant), and I've got good results in a good percentage of cases. That's just what every psycho-therapist hopes for too. You can't provide an answer to everyone's problems, but if you even have a good batting average, it's not a bad thing, is it? And I have the feeling that those who SD wouldn't benefit won't even be coming forward to take my course, you know (this is an important point). As for those that it would - hmm, since when has it been bad to hit back effectively at a bully? One thing I'll tell you - not fighting back in the hope you won't be hurt worse, is just about the worst SD advice you can give anyone. And it's just as good a way of escalating violence, as the bully perceives no resistance to his behaviour.
True.
To a point.
My point is, running is by far the oldest form of Self Defense.
You are talking bully, I am thinking domestic abuse. Of course standing up for yourself tends to nip the matter...but you can't let is escalate first and then hope for a magic cure!
My point is, getting out of the situation ought to be the fist step (OK, if MA helps you to grow the back bone needed, all the better) hitting back is the second.
If the situation has escalted to a point where easing off is a success, it has reache proportions where fighting back could very well blow up in ones face!
Statisticaly women are at risk the most right after a break up...an I mean for being killed.
I am not knocking your project...I am just wondering. It is a tricky subject, after all.
(but do go ahead and start a discussion...after all, that's what this place is here for!)
I agree completely - the extreme cases you describe would be tricky situations indeed.
Incidentally, the girl I mentioned is not such an extreme case - I just mentioned her as an example cause she's a friend of mine. And she's taking theraphy, but I thought that some SD classes would help her a bit - unfortunately it seems the theraphy takes ALL her spare cash, so I thought a free course would be nice.
Oh, and I don't mean it just for people like her - I agree that SD without theraphy, outside help, would probably be useless. But it's also for all those who don't have easy access to in instructor for various reasons. I figure that if these people have a free course so much the better. Any woman who actually comes to me and says, see, I want to learn to defend myself, deserves the best I can give her. Thats the basic reasoning behind http://darkninjaclan.com/
Also, i was thinking - if I gave them a good grounding in various SD strikes and maneuvers, they could then pay a good SD instructor for a few lessons and perfect those maneuvers.
Again, let me stress that I just used that friend of mine as an example, the site is not just for battered women, but for anyone who needs it. I agree completely that when matters have gone to extremes, SD certainly isn't an answer.
By the way, this girl isn't actually physically attacked by her boyfriend, she's just afraid of him because he yells and stuff, not because he attacks her, so hers is certainly not an extreme case. I figured that with good SD knowledge behind her she'd be able to just look him in the eye and say 'let's keep the volume down, shall we.' it's amazing in some cases what a self assured and calm and confident demeanour can do to diffuse a situation instead of escalating it. Quite a few students of mine have used it.
You need to tell your friend to kick this jerk to the curb (the smack is waiting in the wings...) or better yet, tell him that if he ever lays a hand on her you'll kick the living hell out of him!
A friend of mine was dating a jerk like that, not loud or abusive, but controling...lucky for her, me and another girl where there to keep her reality in check!
Hehe, I REALLY wish I could - being half way round the world from a friend is a real pain sometimes. That's EXACTLY what passed through my mind, I wish I could just meet this guy for five minutes, hehehe.
I've changed the whole site around, made it more SD oriented, simplified the language.
You know this controlling type is such a pain - it kind of made me wonder just how many of him were out there.
Am teaching this girl, by the way - it's fun, though it's complex getting the ideas across, I make lots of videos and images. It's very challenging trying to teach someone online, I must say. I enjoy it, even though I'm doing it for free here - it's an awesome challenge. With a student in real-time you just have to demonstrate and correct, but online - that's not easy indeed. I'm going in for utter simplification. Beginning with the most basic of basics and working up from there.
plasmashock, I agree, it IS amazing that you can roll on the floor AND laugh with your A** at the same time. Amazing. But think of the stink. Nevertheless, you win a kewpie doll.
